Watch Out For The URI!
Without pausing to remove his
^wet clothes the general launced
into a heated political argument.
The following day he was
stricken with acute laryngitis.
For treatment the general
was "bled heavily four times
and given gargle of molasses
vinegar and butter and a 'blister
of cantharides' (a preparation of
dried beetles) was placed on his
throat." Gen. Washington rapid
ly became worse. The following
day he died.
The sad story of Gen.
Washington's demise is
characteristic of the frustration
that greets medical attempts to
treat his affliction—URI upper
respiratory infection.
The list of URI related
diseases reads like the who's
who of winter and wet weather
illness: bronchitis tonsilitis flu
re at a
^laryngitis the common cold etc.
URI is caused by either bac
teria or virus carried in the air..
It often defies both prevention!
and cure.
Nevertheless there are some
preventive measures that may
help says Lt. Col. George E.
Allen MC chief of the Preven
tive Medicine Clinic at Darnall
Army Hospital.

The U.S. Army announced
several major advances in
weaponry during 1967. Three of
the most spectacular advances
made public were the Main
Battle Tank (MBT-70) the AH-
56A Cheyenne helicopter and
he ha pa a a
missile system. All three are
now in the final stages of
testing.
The main weapon of the MBT-
70 is a 152mm gun capable of
firing either conventional am
munition or the Shillelagh guid
ed missile. With an automatic
loading system the MBT-70
does not require the fourth crew
member needed in current
series tanks.
The built-in environmental
control which protects the crew
against radiation and chemical
and biological agents also
enables the MBT-70 to operate
buttoned-up for a longer time
than any other tank currently in
operation.
A unique suspension system
permits varying ground clear
ance. The vehicle can be tilted

for sure wherever it is you've simply got to have an active military community

you must be where there's a good job opportunity market.

Battle Of Bulge Being
Waged In Different Way
The Battle of the Bulge is still
being waged and unsuc
cessfully—by many members of
the 2nd Armd. Div.
And the reason behind their
failure to lose weight is that
they aren't going about it in the
right way.
According to Sp4 John Shultz
Pate Dispensary 4 dietician
there is answer to losing weight
that most people overlook.
"The answer is plain and
simple" said Pate. "Will power-
a person must want to lose
weight."
Pate warned that pills and
crash diets are definitely not the
answer: 'Pills are only a sup
plement—something to help you
get started on the way to a more
sensible weight" he said. "And

The AH-56A employs the rigid-
rotor system developed by
Lockheed-California Co. Instead
'of being hinged or tethered the
crash diets often do a lot more
harm than good since they can't
help you develop good eating
habits."
How then should a person go
about starting a diet program?
"It's best to see qualified
a so el
starting the program" said
Pate. "A doctor can plan a diet
program which will best suit the
individual.
"Then it's up to the individual
himself" the specialist said.
"I cannot conceive of a person
who steadfastly resists losing
weight as having much self-
respect. And will power is the
answer."
