New Theater
Dedicated Last
Thursday Night
Ft. Hood's newest movie
theater and the latest of 54
theaters planned by the Army
and Air Force Motion Picture
Service (AAFMPS) was
dedicated last Thursday as post
officials theater officials and a
Hollywood starlet added to the
pomp and splendor of the world
premiere of anew western com
edy motion picture.
The theater was dedicated to
Brig. Gen. Bruce Palmer father
of Gen. Bruce Palmer current
Army vice chief of staff.
Assisted by Robert E. Quick
chief of AAMPS Maj. Gen.
Wendell J. Coats 2nd Armd.
Div. commander unveiled the
bronze dedication plaque which
will be permanently displayed in
the lobby of the Palmer Theater.
To signal the official opening
of the theater Miss Kebrina
Kinkade a Hollywood starlet
who has appeared in numerous
movies television programs and
commercials snipped the yellow
and bronze ribbon which was
draped across the theater's
screen.
Quick also presented Coats
with a golden symbolic key to
the theater's front door signi
fying that AAFMPS "has now
turned the facility over to Uncle
Sam."
"Old Theater 4 on 24th Street
was opened Jan. 7 1943 to be
used for a five-year period. It
has served us well but I think
it is time to move on" Coats
said. "Perhaps one could say
this new theater is symbolic of
the new era at Ft. Hood. With
new buildings all around us we
are all on the move."
This structure is obviously
in ad it on to
permanent facilities here at Ft.
Hood" Quick said. "And you
should always remember that
it is your theater. It was not
built by the taxpayer's dollar
but by your attendance at
movies in our other theaters
here and by the attendance of
he so at A A S
movies throughout the country."
The Palmer Theater is the
29th to be opened since the arm
ed forces motion picture service
began a construction program
about five years ago. There are
54 such structures planned in
the current project. According
to Quick all but two of them
will be located in the continenal
United States. One is planned
for a base in the Philippines
and another is planned for a
rest and recreation (R&R) cen
ter in Hawaii.
The theater opened to the
sounds of the Hell on Wheels
band and a capacity crowd and
dignitaries who had paid to
witness the dedication ceremony
and see the world premiere of
Support Your Local Gun-
fighter" a western comedy
starring James Garner and
Suzanne Pleshette.
Miss Kinkade added a lot of
glamor to the usual military
ceremony pomp. Appearing in
shimmering gold hotpants
outfit the 38-23-35 starlelt said
that she traveled around the
country to attend post theater
openings whenever the schedule
allowed "just to thank you boys
ah men for being here and
doing your jobs."
"I'm sick and tired of people
running the military service
down. I just want you to know
that I appreciate what you are
doing and am proud of you"
she said.
Lt. Col. Robert J. Gabrielli
2nd Armd. Div. personnel and
administration (G-l) officer
served as master of ceremonies
for the dedication. Maj. Alan
D. Hobson division adjutant
general read the general orders
naming the theater dedicated
for Brig. Gen. Palmer.
Palmer served more than 44
years of continuous active duty
with the Army rising from
private to brigadier general. He
served in the Spanish-American
War and World War I retiring
just after World War II began.
He died in 1958 at the age of
80
Palmer served more thtn 44
years of continuous active duty
with the Army rising from
private to brigade general.
He served in the Spanish-
American War and
'His restless and innovative
spirit contributed so greatly to
the development of the modern
armored concept" Coats said.
'It is then in recognition of
this man his achievements and
his spirit that we dedicate this
theater."
With that the ribbon was cut
Palmer Theater was dedicated
and the show was on!
