Just before sunrise Dec. 16
1944 outposts of the 394th Inf.
Rgmt. began to hear artillery
fire. It was passed off as outgo
ing fire from friendly guns. In
telligence reports from the night
before had reported only two
German horse-drawn artillery
pieces facing the American
forces.
The "friendly firing" turned
out to be a German bom
bardment that lasted more than
an hour. Instead of the two
artillery pieces the 394th Inf.
was facing the I SS Panzer
Corps and the German Sixth
Panzer Army in the beginning
of the Battle of the Bulge. The
Germans under cover of
darkness had successfully
maneuvered their artillery into
a striking position against the
American forces.

Families Observe
Usual'Work Day'
The families of men assigned
to the 1st Bn. 6th Field Arty.
1st Cav. Div. were invited to
observe an average "work day"!
in the field at the Sheridan'
Shillelaigh Range recently.
Approximately 50 dependents
watched a fire-power demon
stration. After the dem
onstration the guests were
hosted by the consolidated field
mess where they were treated
to barbequed beef hamburgers
and hot dogs.
The dependents finished their
field trip by going down to the
firing batteries to observe the
close teamwork that is vital to
a "good-shooting" field artillery
battalion.
