intoxicated is especially
hazardous as can be attested
by the fact that alcohol is a
factor in at least 50 percent
of all traffic fatalities. As
always the best practice is
not to mix drinking and
driving.
Driving while fatigued can
be just as dangerous as
driving while intoxicated.
Fatigue can be due to lack of
sleep overexertion or long
hours of steady driving. Be
sure you are well rested
before you start your trip.
While seat belts cannot
prevent accidents they can
and do reduce the severity of
injuries and save lives. Seat
belts are your best insurance
against injury or death.
Drowning accidents are
second only to privately
owned vehicle accidents as
the major cause of fatalities
to Ft. Hood personnel. The
buddy system should always
be used when you are swim
ming. It is also important to
know the area in which you
are swimming. Check for
water depth obstructions
drop offs and anything else
which might lead to trouble.
Know your swimming limits
and stay within them. Also
don't forget to check the
weather forecast for the day
of your outing. Care in
regard to the principles of
boating safety is essential at
all times. When boating
never overload your boat as
this increases the chances of
being swamped. If the boat is
swamped or overturned stay
with it.
Horseplay around the water
is always dangerous but don't
assume someone is playing if

There will be hunting over
the Labor Day weekend and
it is important to treat all
guns as.though they were
ioaded. The gun should not be
loaded until the hunter is in
the target area and the
safety should be engaged un
til ready to fire.
Have a nice holiday but be
sure to be back safe and
