8-:nte Senator Anthony and White
were appointed to wait on the Presi-
dent and inform him that unites he
might hare aome further communica-
tion to make the Senate was ready to
adjourn without delay.
The Benate committee appointed to
wait upon the PreiideLt reported that
the Senate in extra acsaion would not
be required longer than Saturday or
possibly Tueaday. Adjourned to 12
M. to-morrow.

tor RoberUon of South Carolina ac-
companied by ex-CongressmanVal-lace
called on the President ton-day
protesting against Senator Patterson's
proposition for a new election on the
ground that the substantial or indus-
. trial Interests of South Carolina would
be naturally damaged by such an elec-
tion. It was further stated to the
President that none of the Republican
members of tbat State had been con-
sulted on the subject and therefore it
was in the nature of an independent
proposition on the part of Senator
Patterson and stimulated perhaps by
Oorernor Chamberlain. Mr. Itobert-
" son atated that the solution of the
South Carolina complications could be
accomplished by more simple means
namely: The withdrawal of the troops
from the State capital when the people
themselres would adjust the ditliculty.
The President received Robertson and
Wallace courteously as they are natives
of the State and said they would at
all times be welcome.
' Washington M'irch 14. Simon
Cameron has formally vacated his seat
in the Senate. It is supposed that
Senator Hamlin will succeed him as
charman of the Committee on Foreign
Affairs.
Senator Patterson submitted to the
President an elaborate plan for a new
election which he favors.
Attorney General Devins accorded
the Louisiana Republicans a prolonged
interview. They seem well satisfied
with the result. The pressure in favor
of the new election plan is becoming
earnest from the most radical Repub-
licans. It may be said that Hayes will
not be committed to it. He and his
advisers are reported as saying that
they could not see how it can be done
without Federal interference which is
more in discord with the spirit of the
inaugural than tho use of bayonets.

" Postmaster General is so overwhelmed
with letters of all sorts that it is use-
less to attempt to reply to any of them
at prosent.
It is reported that Mr. Schurz has
tendered the position of Assistant Sec-
retary of the Interior to ex-Senator
Henderson of Missouri. This same
Henderson was dismissed as assistant
counsel against Babcock for reflections
against the White House.
The death of Madame Le Vert the
poetess is reported.
A Baltimore dispatch says on the
- eleventh of March the Atlantic coast
line of railways and connections be-
tween Richmond Virginia and Mont-
gomery put in effect a mail schedule
by which the time between New York
.. and New Orleans is sixty-four hours
and thirty-four minutes.

An extra session of Congress will not
be commenced before about the first of

The Commissioner of Internal Reve-
nue has issued a circular to the collec-
tors in the South that ordinary means
of collecting the revenue in portions of
- North Carolina South Carolina Vir-
ginia Georgia Alabama and Tennea-
see have failed. He advises the col-
' lectors that the use of the militarv
t"-Bhouid be avoided wherever possible
and assigns throe deputies lor eacn
collector's district. These deputies
are specially designed to suppress the
" illicit manufacture of spirits and to-
bacco.

Tho Baltimore American says the
scheme of holding a new election for
governor and lcgUlaturo in Louisiana

fallen through. President Hayes has

civil service reform said he never con
templated the black board examina-
tion of applicants which was institu-
ted by Georgo Wm. Curtis. He

the men who had passed the very best
examination under the rules should
now bo in the penitentiary. Ho failed
to say to whom he referred.
Tyner accpts the position of assist
ant postmaster general.
A telegram from uovernor Hampton
was laid before the President to-day
stating that he would regard the new
election project of Senator Patterson
as an insult and that he does not ask
the President to recognize him. All
that he wishes is that the troops be
withdrawn from the State in order
that the will of the people may be car-
ried out rani that peaceably.
Col. Philip who has been deputy
marshal for twenty-five years declines
to continue in his appointment and
Dmiglns as marshal does not please
many of the lawyers.
The cabinet in special session to-3ay
considered the bureau appointments
and commissions expued or about to
expire. None of the diplomatic and
general character were considered
nor were Southern affairs considered

morrow will be devoted to Louisiana
and South Carolina and it is believed
that unless the parties compromise on
their own motion that by Tuesday at
the latest a solution will be forced.
A store at Benning's station on the
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was
burned and two men who slept in the
store were foun 1 burned beyond recog-
nition. Doubtless a ca e of murder
and robbery.
Interest on the bonds called to-day
ceases June 15.

ton special says that it has been deter-
mined te withdraw the troops from
the State House in New Orleins aud
Columbia as soon as the Senate ad
journs.
The President lias the most positive
assurances from the conservatives in
Louisiana and South Carolina that no
outbreak shall occur aud that the
right of all citizen shall be respected
and protected.

some of these are very bnsy with the
Pennsylvania railway. Statements of

lated and gain credence because of
the bondholder having no mean of
knowing whether they are true or

ger or agent to pat their affair be-
fore their mortgagee and creditor in
the clearest light. There will be an
cod to American railway credit here
for many days. Hitherto it ha been
he fashion to keep silent when mat
ters went wrong but tbat may become
impossible if disaster follows dis-
aster as they have been doing.

ate discussed briefly the resolution in
regard to investigating the charges
against Senator Grover of Oregon but
without taking action and then went
into executive session.
In the Senate after the doors were
closed a message was received from
tbe President transmitting various
nominations and also notifying the
benate that he had no further commu-
nications to make.
At 2:10 the doors were opened and
the Senate adjourned till 12 m. to mor
row when the nominations now pend-
ing will be disposed of and the Senate
will adjourn sine die.

nounced that the account of his inter-
view as published in the Baltimore
(luzette of Thursday is utterly false.
The administration appears to have
satisfactory assurance that violence
will not follow the withdrawal of the
troops.
The confirmation of the fears of ul-
tra Southern Republicans tbat Stanley
Matthews would come to the Senate
from Ohio depresses the friends of
Chamberlain Packard and Kellogg.
The nomination is regarded as an en-
dorsement by Ohio of the pledges
made by Stanley Matthews to the
Southern leaders during the progress
of the electoral count.
Washington March 10. The new
cabinet held a session of an hour anil a
half this morning on postollices after
which tho Postmaster General re-
mained in consultation. The meeting
commenced at 10 o'clock preceded by
a consultation with Attorney Genpral
Devins. The postoflices at Charleston
and Columbia will not lie disturbed
at present.
Washington March 10. The indi
cations arc that quite a number of
Democratic votes will bo required to
confirm Fred Douglass as marshal of
the District of Columbia.
San Francisco March 16. Six
Chinamen who were clearing land in
Butte county were attacked by whites.
Five are dead ; tbe sixth escaped slight
ly wouuded by feigning death.
Little Rock March 16. The steam-
er Florence is reported sunk with 5000
bales of cotton.
Sckakton Pa. March 16. The
committee appointed by the unem
ployed mechanics and laborers for the
purpose of obtaining relief for the starv
ing poor waited on the mayor yester-
day to ask his co-operation. : The
mayor pledged himself to use bis best
efforts in their behalf and assured them
assistance would be granted without
delay. A meeting of business men will
be held this evening to devise means
for relief. The chairiran of the work
inirmens meeting savs the men are
growing impatient and nothing but
prompt relief would restrain them from
not and plunder.
New Yohk March 16. At a meet
ing of the bondholders of the recog
nized debt of North Carolina yesterday
a resolution was adopted tor the ap
pointment of a committee of three to
c infer with the Noith Carolina com-
missioners. Tho chairman of the meet
ing will anuounce the committee at a

Lady Smith who had she lived
three months longer would have com
pleted her one hundred aud fourth
year died in Lowestoft England on
February 3. At the age of twenty
three she was married to Sir James Ed
ward south who was then a young
physician ot limited means but had
the courage to purchase on bis respon
sibility the collections of Linnaeus and
thus became the founder and first pres-
ident of the Linnaeus Society. He
died iu 1828 so that Lady Smith after
thuty-two years of wedlock lived in
widowhood for nearly half a century.
She had a remarkable constitution
She hardly knew what illness was until
within the last three .tears. . She had
preserved 'nearly all hur teeth and
her eyesight was good enough to ena
ble her to read tbe newspapers. At
the age of one hundred she preserved
many traits ot her beauty aud her un
dimmed eyes aud fresh color called
