U S. Grant President United States.
To this letter the President replied as
ollows:
" I sincerely appreciate this renewed
evidence of the satisfaction of tbi Adminis-
tration. When I was elected four years
ago there was less regard to party lines
than in the lut campaign. Political dif-
ferences and personal hostilities were
clearly defined Hues of party but not-
standing this I would continue to en-
deavor 10 make my administration one
which will meet the approval of the great
party which elected po but all the people
of the U. S. The cdmmlttee meu then
the Ilou. Mr. Wilson and read to him a
letter informing him of his eleotion as

constituting as follows: We take this oc-

the high honors conferred upon you by
the people of the United States. You have
long been identified with the Legislative
branoh of government during a period of
unexampled dicffiulty and we are sure we
state the universal feeling where we as-
sure you of their sincere respeots and
hearty good will. Mr. Wilson thanked
the committee for their congratulations
and for their assuranses of good will of
both houses of Congress. Ho gratefully
accepted the high truit oonfided to Mm hr
the people of the United Statos and be
should Btrive to discharge the duties of
the position assigned him with seal fidel-
ity. He expressed a hope that the 00m-
ing four years would be consecrated
by those entrusted with power to pence
unity and development of the oountryand
that there in every department of the gov-
ernment might retire at the cloBe of their
official careers with conscientiousness of
duties well done and with the approval of
their countrymen.

S10 Semper Tyiunnts. These words
were upon the Great Seal of the Common-
wealth of Virginia. They mean Thus al-
waya to tyrants. In 18U5 the seal was
lost and Booth having madt the words
infamous in using them when he assassi-
nated Abraham Lincoln a new seal was
adopted with the motto Liberty and Un-
ion. Lately the old seal has been found
and the Legislature of Virginia has again
adopted it. As a motto for patriots these
Latin words will do very well but patri-
ots may hope that they will never be used
again In an.aot of assassination. That aot of
liootu did the South more harm than all
her sufferings losses and defeats oaused
by the war Houston Telegraph.

TOASTS.
At first Bight the iyongruity between
the meanings attacked 0 the ward "toast"
would seem to be irreceicilable ; It Is none
the less true that one fs born of the oth-
er. Toasted bread ojid toasted biscuit
were as necessary la .many an old Eng-
lish drink as roastedtipples were to the
wassail bowl.
A poetaster inspittl by punch de-
scribes the gods assenibed in solemn con.
olave to test the worth ' the newly. inven-
ted beverage; Appollq outributes water

the'r united efforts poducing a liquor
the first taste of which made Jupiter de
clare that heaven was tever true heaven
before. I
The connection of a tst with drinking
is therefore one of aneent standing ; but
it was not until the banning of the last
oentury that the worldn&de its first step
towards its present mewing ; for in 1709
the "Tatler" speaks oft as anew name
found out by the wits to make a lady's
name as effective as borage in a glass
whon a man is drlnktig. According to
the same authority the new form of gal-
lantry sprung from a fealc of a half-fuddled
worshipper of the ex. A oelebrated
beauty dabbling in the publlo waters at
Bath one of her admirrs fillod a glass
with water from the ban and drank it to
the fair one's health. Another young fel-
low not to be outdone iwore that though
he did not like the liqur he would have
the toast and tried to jimp into the bath
to the lady. He was pnvented doing so ;
but from that time very lady whose
obarins offered an exatio for a glass in
her honor was dubbed a 'toast."
To this explanation vliich we find from
an uncredited source wimay add the oor-
reot version of a neut'pigram whioh is
sometimes blundered trough ignorance
of its leading allusio.. lue epigram
probably a hundred yeas old is on a Mies

Gardening. We areiow fully on the
Teres of spring and the white and bleak
shores of the North are. till ioe-looked it
is with ub high time to ittend to the du ty
as well as pleasure of 'ranging the de
tails of our gardens fo the coming Bea-
Sun .
As a general thing Ho work usually
carried on toward theclose of January
may be continued in Lbruary. It is to
be supposed that by tblitime horticultur-
ists have planted man; of the staple veg-
etables so to speak sub as cabbage let-
tuce Irish potatoes artohokes horse rad-
dish peas parsnips bets carrots turn-
ips salify Spanish mustard Bhellots
garlic eta. !
At this time the mildle of February
you may say it is will to plant early
corn as well as a few telons cucumbers
cimblins squashes etctakiug the risk of
frosts between bow ud the middle of
April. Though as a geieral rule in this
part of Texas it is as will to defer a full
planting of the latter named articles to
the hrat or second weekin March except
earty corn. y
Good gardeners say Bw is the time to
plant out arematio and lot herbs.
To succeed well bieal up your ground
thoroughly and deeply. Now is the time
also to set out truit tiees. The ground
should be prepared and carefully selected
with a view to the varicy you intend to
plant tiememoer wbei troes of North
em growth arc to be plaited they require
more than native trees as they have to
ungergo acoiimation. To insure the suc
cess of a Northorn fruit tree it may be
necessary to propngalo 11 upon Blocks al
