'5 coftUfuxcolDg article from
labor for cotton factories but we can
llmport such and soon train others
The late war has left us many widows
and orphans who would gladly accept
that kind of employment. Tho great
trouble with our people la they hate
confinement lhey do not like regu
lar work ami expect and require too
much freedom to make good operatives
in lactones
But to some of tho advantages. Cost
of transportation of cotton to market
is a big item in tho account. Thero
tho commission merchant brokers
insurance drayages comprising etc
all come in between the planter and
tho manufacturer and tho manufac
tured goods havo to some extent to
return to tho consumer through simi
lar channels and bo subject to heavy
charges so that by the time the farm
er's cotton ho sold at 12 cents a pound
lets tuck to him In goods he pays an
advance of from two hundred to five
hundred per cent aud this on tho or
dinary articles of clothing used by our
farming people.
If we had factories in Dallas or even
one small cotton factory it would save
to the people all this "cost of trans-
portation" "charges" "cftiimkslons"
"brokerage" cl.' or it would add the
cost of these Items to tho credit side of
tho investment. But another nreat
advantage In having factories at homo
is In diversifying production. A farmer
who raises ten ba!e:i of cotton but pays
out nlno (rjometimcs cloven) f.;r his
corn his baeoa and other supplies Is
not accumulating wealth very rapidly.
As of an Individual o of communities.
Our beloved people of the South have
been "hewers of f tone and drawers of
water" for new mid old England. We
have produced the raw material and
consumed tho same manufactured
with more prolit to tho manufacturer
than there was in tho production. . Wo
have been at their mercy.
Wc aro in the heart of a good cotton

tion right t our and beside saving the
items above montioncd.all or nearly all
