A traveling correspondent of the
Saint Louis Globe writes as follows of
our elty :
DALLAS.
Three or fouryears ago this place was
a village; to-day It Is a city of eight
- thousand to ten thousand lnhaoltanu
and has true metropolitan airs in many
rasmcta. It Is. aa well one of the
handsomest plaoe lutha at ale; has
great advantage of railroad cornier
tioiis aud seems to bo the center of
emigration Just now. There are two
dally papers and Ncvcral weekly apcri
pill Jlnlicd here and Ihey arc about to
enjoy the expensive luxury of gan in
tliu .htrectn etc. Already street ears
run to ami from the depot to the cen-
ter of the city. Hut Dallas I decidedly
"fast" and there Is a dangcrou ele-
ment of the "rough" charui'lerlhtlu of
all new aud prosperous cities existing
here which niiixt be exterminated be-
fore there is safely for life and pro-
perty. 1
Halooiis by far outnumber Hie re-
quirement of tho place aud kiiiiiIi''M
tnluves and blacklegs not only nightly
but daily ply their protltabie vocations
ill open ilt'thilicc of law. The newly
elected mayor General Cabell of con-
federate army fame In Arkansas
seems determined to handle this tribe
without gloves but from the Hacciuieus
I saw he certainly will have bis hands-
mure tliau full. The future of Dallas
is uioro promising than any oilier city
iu Texas and when rid of theso punts
of society a more abiding faith iu Iter
stability will be fell by residents nnd
a greater feeling of security by new-
comers. Another Donation by Yiinilcrblll.
The Nashville Banner of Thursday
says: "Humors to the etteet that Mr.
Vanderbilt had made an additional do-
nation of $10)IHK) In aid of tho Vander-
blit university have been in circulation
in Nashville for two days past but we
have refrained from publishing said
rumors until the truth thereof could be
established. The amount of tills dona-
tion has been reported at sums ranging
from V).0o0 to jflDO.lHK). The board of
trust held two sessions yesterday anil
one last evening. At the morning ses-
sion the secretary ol'tliU' board Dr. A.
Young read a communication from Mr.
Vanderbilt donating the sum of 10(1-
000 to lie Used as u building fund in
order tbat the university may be com-
pleted id accordance with the plans
aud specifications for said buildings
which have heretofore been approved
by him. The gift is made on condit ion
that no portion of the money is to be
used in getting the university under
way but Is to bo expended exclusively
on buildings adding materially to their
architectural beauty and attractiveness
wntcli Tact will be unuLiiy appreciated
by the citizens of Nashville especially
and the Vanderbilt university will
tuns be made one of the handsomest
and most complete educational Institu-
tions on tlie continent."

The first organization of the United
Order as it is called took place iu Halt
Lake city on it turd ay in tliu twentieth
ward. The principal features of this
new organisation are ttie giving to
a common fund under control of
elected officers the property of all
members the control of the labor of
members and the production and
manufacture as far as possible of all
articles consumed.
It is probable that similar organi.a-
tlons will bo effected in all the wards
in tho city and throughout the Mor-
mon settlements and that member
ship will become tho test of loyalty to
the Mormon church as it is strongly
advocated by the church leaders.
Two Kussian suns and carriages
trophies of tho Crimean war have been
received at the royal arsenal Woolwich
having been returned from Colchester
where they have stood as public mouu
incuts lor anoui seventeen years it
has been notified that several other
trophies of a similar character have
been given up by the JjdciiI authorities
of other towns and that they are ou
their way to Woolwich where they
will bo broken up. They are very few
Russian guns to be seen iu the royal
arsenal Woolwich and these are gen-
erally speaking only such as are re-
markable for some peculiarity one for
instance having a cannon ball from
British nun lodged in the muzzle and
jammed fast. The sentiment which
induces country corporations to return
their trophies out of compliment to the
duchess of Ed in burg will we hope en-
dure; but it Is doubtful.
In a natural state tears and laughter
go hand in hand ; for they are twin-
bom. Like two children sleeping in
one cradle when one stirs and wakes
the other wakes also. Ueeeher.
