I' or instance lu the case of a lawyer
tho Illegality is utmost palpable lie
Is a sworn olllcer of tho court and has
been so regarded for centuries. At the
command of tho court ho assumes tlio
cares und tho regpougloility of repre-
senting a moneyless client. (Should ho
refuso to 1111 this ollleeof charity ho Is
in contempt of court and may bo lined
or his name may bo stricken from the
roll of attorneys. In his case
or that of a lilivslelnn It llimtlu
resolves itwelf Into a tax on
brains. In the case of a merchant
tho Injustice Is not obvious lie In-
vests bo much capital lu the enterprise
before him. After investing this capi-
tal he proceeds to manipulate it ac-
cording as his interest may dictate
Now tho question naturally occurs
why should this merchant bo forced
to pay this extra tax while tho farmer
is permitted to puisue ids avocation
untrainmeled. There is no liian who
would not consider It an outrage to
force a farmer to pay a bonus for the
prlvellgo of cultivating tho soil but
osllghtrelleotioii will Hhow that an
equal Injustice is dime when the occu-
pation tux is forced from those who
roprescut otuor walks In life.

Mr. J fenry Ogden's idea of tho per

coincide with the views entertained by

placed certain restrictions on his liber-

District Criminal Court.
Judge Hare adjourned the court at
twelvo o'clock till Monday morning
Consequently not much business of
Importance was transacted. Only one
oaso was tried that of tho colored bar-
ber ltoyer. Tho prisoner was charg-
ed with stealing a watch and chain
from a house. Tho jury after some
deliberation returned a verdict of gull-
ty and assessed his punishment at
three years in tho penitentiary. Much
sympathy Is felt for the unfortunate
iiiau as heretofore ho has been re
garded us an industrious and
honest citieu. His attorneys
nope to obtain a new trial
when they think evidence sulllcleut
to acquit him not adduced at this
trlul.wlll be forthcoming. On Wednes-
day of the approachlug week tho cases
appealed front tho Mayor's court will
be tried. Attorneys should tuko notice
or this otherwise their clients' bonds
mny he forfeited. Next Saturday
closes tho last; week of this term of the
court. Those who have been convicted
will receive their sentence and bo
transferred to the keeping of Ward
Dewey & Co. The remainder will be a
burden ou the county exchequer. This
is bad enough but how much worse
IB it to realize that Innocent meu may
bo and are ladgulshlng through these
sultry months In a wretohed Jail vain-

would give them liberty and hope.
