That this postponement is duo solely to
the fact thnt it is tho wish and purpose
of tho administration to ellect the
election of a republican n speaker uud
iirruiigo tho committees Accordingly
no ouo can or will deny. Mr. Hayes
would willingly send u hall'do.eu 1'aek-

Thu democratic parly has been kept
in a good humor by tho lalo extruordi
liury executive deference to its views
but it should never for onn moment
forget that there Is danger in all this
seeming mildness. That it is worth
more to tho republican party to handle
tho dillerent committees of the house
by u comproniiso speaker than South
Carolina and Louisiana uro worth to it.
By sudh an arrangement an organiza
tion can be effected by which tho ubso
Into certainty of a democrutio victory
in 1HSII which oxists now will bo ren-
dered doubtful if not perfectly imprac
ticable. Tho lust raeo was a close
shave nnd all tho wiles of republican
party trickery will bo severely taxed
to prevent a recurrence.
With a democratic majority and or
gunization in the lower houso tho ulti
mate defeat of the republican party is
only a question of time They know
this ns well us wo do and hence the
bland approaches of the udministrution
and its apparent liberality to the south
dud tho democratic party generally.
The great fear is that another electoral
Commission may stand eight to seven
with tho majority on tho wrong Milo for
them. This must be prevented and
lienee the political heads of Packard
and Chamberlain must roll from the
Hcaflbld even at the imminent risk of
tho ripping up of tho frauds of the
Louisiana returning board by which
both Hayes and Packard were elected.
Packard's subsequent silence is omin-
ous to the administration und can
bo explained upon no other theory only
upon that of future reward by this or
somo subsequent republican administra-
tion.' The senate is by no means safe for
tho administration and with a demo-
cratic houso und organization Hayes
would havo roil i: U sailing indeed. He
has played a bold giimo to provid.
against this contingency by deferring
tho extra session which has betfi
iirnvo public necessity every moment
sinew tho adjournment. Wo confidently
believe that all this will provo only
vast waste of nerve; is in fact if tho
democracy stands firm against the Be.
dilutions and blandishments of llr
Hayes and the liberal wing of tho il.il
oral renublitian party which is now no
niirtv at all if they aro defeated in
their bold attempt to secure tho orgm-
ination of the next houso of representa
tives.
