To the Editor of the Haruld
Ai tui Is San Jaointo day nd Tery natp
urally brinff into Tiew the momories of thai
day I gie you the following facU:
1q the Supreme court of Louisiana in
Now Orleans in Juno 1845 a case was pend-
ing which drew lnrgo crowd.
Among the spectators was a North
Carolina sthool-teacher named Zimri Hnt
now a wi'll-known und honored citizen cf
DiiIIhs. Zimri a lone young man seeking
U s fortune in thn wilds beforo him stopped I
iu Now Orluans for a few days and in one of
those das stnifwlod into tho Supreme court
room of LouisUna. The cn bofore the
co irt happened to be a remarkable one and
drew to thn court room a largo crowd.
Our North Curoliua Ur-hauled boy other-
wise Zimri Hunt took a seat and opened
his oyes over tho audience i'rotty soon a
gentleman entered and quietly and modestly
took his seal among the spectator. Hut our
informant says every one was struck with
the appenram o of the stranger.
At the moment a lawyer was in tho
midst of a brilliant speech; but a
limthor lawyer pinched his arm and
wliiip.red something in his ear. Tbe spi'aU-t-r
ewppi and utmr a short piiute said .
-.May it please the court I havo just been in-
formed that Ooneral Sam Houston fcx-I res-
ident of Texas is in the room. i op
ny speech to move that General Houston
be invited to a seat within the bar. A
pause ensued and the Chiet said' 'General
Sam Houston the lx-Preident of
Texas is invited to a wat
within the bar of this court."
Of course General Houston rospondod. Uut
the manner of his response is what concorns
the people of Texas. Judge Hunt says he
arose from his seat among the multitude ad-
vanced with the circle of tho bar and first
most inimitably saluted the court then
bv wave of the hand the bar and took his
seat the observed of all observers.
On this 21st ot April 1880
1 .ive these reminiscences for what they
are worth. Ten thousand things could be
told of the extraordinary career of General
