west. Hickay's name for honesty and honor
in connection with hides and wool through-
out the state Is well known and we predict

Doputy United States Marshal Thomas
Gerrin brought down from Denton Monday
and lodged la jail hore an Important pris-
oner in the person of Matthew Gray one of
the surviving membnrs of the old Bass gang
jli) was arrested In Big Elm bottom by the
officer on the charge of robbing the United
States mails. The officer arrested him on a
warrant issued on an Indictment found by the
United States grand jury. I

day it will be celebrated on tho Oth intend.
The celebration which comes off under the
auspices of tho Queen City Guards promises
to eclipse anything of a similar character ever
beforo givon in tbis city. The preparation
being mado are otia grand scale ami nothing
is being left undone that is calculated to
nmko the day a success in every sense of the
word. The day will bo observed in a style
becoming the capital city of North T.-w.
The military companies throughout the ata'o
have been invited lo be present and partici-
pate in a company drill the whole to con-
clude with a grand drill for wbi.'li
a prizo of $200 will bo givon to
tho boat drilled company. Tho civil
societies of the citv will turn out in the grand
street parade. A'larga evergreen arch will
bo orected at the corner et Main ami lVydras
streets. Mr. W. J. hemp of St. Louis the
beer king gives a prizo of $100 to the best
drilled visiting empny. There will l.e
speeches n superb real old-fashioned bar-
becuo dinner and a general Jolilloaiion. At
night there will bo a grand display of fire-
works which will bo well worth sceirg. Ten
thousand cartridges have been ordered lor the
occasion. Among the larger lire-works
which aro on tho foeket order are "The
Lone Star" "Washington on horseback" an
inimeiiso pieco f lire-works of life size and
the "Stars and Stripes" shewing plainly the
different colors. The lst will b a life-sized
representation of the "God less of Liborty."
Qtioon City Park whore tho festivities t:tke
placo will be brilliantlv lighted up with
lamps of red white and blue so as t form
the American colors. The scene will cer-
tainly be a most pleiwnR one to the eye.
There will bo other display of Uroworks. too
numerous to mention here. Mr. Weyorsberg.

brewery deserves praise tor the untiring
energy! und princely liberality lie has
exhibited to insure tho success of the cele-
bration. He is the grand Marshall ol the
dav and the grandest procession ever formed
in Dallas will bo placed in order of march by
him on that day. Ten thousand visitors are
expected to visit Dallas on that occasion and
Mr. Woyorsberg is daily in receipt of letters
asking in regard to tho runningof the trains
which will be published in due time.
Knifed lo Death
From a gentleman who arrived iu the city
Mmday from Denton a Ukrai.d repot ter
learned that a fatal difficulty occurred Rt
Chinn's Uhappel in that county six ind a
half milos northwost of LowUville about
nine o'clock Sunday night. Two young men
named respectively John Maleiie. and Fred
Ballinger each aged about twenty years
bad a list light about a young lady named
HrowningJ in which Ballinger was whipped.
Malono then went into the house where he
remained until tho sinking wa concluded
liallinger laid in wait for him ouUide and as
Malono Btepped out tho door liallinger
plunged a knife into his breast in the region
of tho heart inflicting a wound from which
Malono died in ten minutes. Ballinger then
mounted bis horse rode away and bad not
boon npprehendod up to yesterday morning.

the jail of consumption. Ho had never been

of murder in the first degree. Ho took ah
appeal to tho court of appeals an 1 owing to
soino technicality in the record the cs. wa
remanded back. A second trial resulted in
conviction for murder in the tlrst degree and
he again appealed the case and is awsiiing
its decision. Pollard was to have been tried
to-day for his life but death intervened
anil he has gone before the Great JuJotc
answer for his sins. He declined lo make any
confession before he died although he was
asked ropeatodly to do bo but was silent in
regard to the matter. Just betore bis deatb
he became very religious.
A Hard Ho In
About five o'clock Monday morning a
hoavy rain began falling which floodel tUe
streots as they have not been before iu yews.
It poured down unabated for nearly three
hours and though it slackened up it rained
until ten o'clock in the morning. There wis
a hoavy rain west of hero and it extended u
far east as Marshall and from Muscogee in
the Indian territory on the north to h earns
on the south. Last evening late tho Trini'y
rivor was rapidly rising.
On Trial for Murder. j
Allen Wright colored who was arreted '
and lodged in the county jail some three
months ago on tho charge of killing a negro
man near Hutchins and against whom the
grand jury found an indictment charging
him with murder was arraigned iu the dis-
trict court Monday. Judge Fi'd and Hon.
J. B. Simpson appeared for tho defense
and pleaded guilty to manslaughter but the
stato declined to receive the plea and he went
to trial. The greater portion of t'ae day was
consumed in empanneling a jury after
which a number of witnesses worooxumined.
The trial is still progressing.

The city council mot Monday morning at

dent of the Water Supply company for tho
purpose of renewing on tho part of tho city
tho contract with tho company for water.
There were but a few members of tho com-
pany present and nothing was done save to
submit a written bid to tiio company to re-
port their action at the next regular meeting
of the council.
