TUESDAY JULY 10 1906.
SHOW THEM AMARILLO.
On next Sunday July 14th
probably tha largest body of men
members of one organization that
has ever done so will pass through
Amarillo. This body is the Elks
enroute to Denver to attend the
National Convention. It is to be
regretted that they could not ar
rivi here Saturday as the Elks of
this city were arranging to .how
them a royal time. But this cn't
be so the next best thing' is to
show them as much of and tell
them as much about Amarillo as is
possible to do so in two hours.
A welcome bv the citizehs and a
spin around town' would be one of
the greatest advertisements that
could be given the city and would
no doubt be the means of some of
these people or their friends mak
ing the Panhandle their future
home. Never let any opportunity
pass to proclaim the advantages of
this country and especially such
an opportunity as will be presented
next Sunday. Between four and
five hundred Deople on three special
trains will Dass through and at
least that many ot Amarillo's
citizens sohuld erect them and
tell them of our country.
IS GOVERNOR FOLK A GREAT MAN?
"In Missouri. the liquor dealers
have bowed to the strong ara of
the law and will continue to do so
as long as I am governor. No sa-
loons shall be open for business on
Sundays in any of the larger cities
of Missouri and I find a greater
prosperity throughout the state
since the enforcement of the laws
governing the liquor traffic. In my
official position if I can please the
law-abiding citizens apd displease
the corruptionists I shall be satis
fied. The corrtintionists have no
power if you stand up and fight

the same thoughtless crowd is try?

done to warrant his name to be used
in that connection? In making his
holier-than-thou speeches against
bribery and intemperance and he
has never ventured away from axi-

familiar two thousand years .before

Jord-he is hailed by a host of good
thoughtless people as a great leader
5 To avert the menacine loolitical
cataclysm of socialism that is sweep-
w&
ing from Europe towards this coun-
try it requires more in our leaders
than eve glasses frock coats and
moral sermonizing.
' At the next residential election
the socialists will likely poll two
million votes in this country. ..Their
gain will be due to the innovation
of trust? that are so rapidly retiring
the competitive system. At a time
so fraught with new and weighty
problems for the statesman what
time have we to listen to the broth-
er who has nothing to say except on
purity of official life and Sunday
closing. Whether Folk is innocent
of design or methods his purpose
is a matter of indifference as stu-
pidity and dodging are equally
dangerous in a high public official.
The state of Kansas has a good
pure food law. Adulteration put
nf action rats and dogs don't go
up there. In Texas we are taking
the same chances with a ham sand
wich as they ' do in Arkansas
Public sentiment will have so ad
vanced in time that Texas will
crawl into tne band wagon sooner
or later.
Amarillo has organized a Civic
League which is supposed to have
for its object the beautifying of the
Yellow City the planting of trees
and flowers and the decoration of
the grounds and yards of private
residences and public thorough
fares. It is to be hoped that the
body will hold on and accomplish
its object. Stratford Star.
Ex-Secretary of State Sam
B. Cook has bagged two judgments
for libel against two metropolitan
newspapers of St. Louis one against
the Globe-Democrat for $150000
and the other against the Post-Dispatch
for $50000. Mr. Cook's bus
iness . versatility has never been
questioned by those who know him
but the most ardent admirers of his
resourcefulness never suspected that
he could devise a plan that would
compel his old time enemies to re
imburse him for fruitless campaign
expenses.
The Jericho correspondent to the
Banner-Stockman gives some good
advice and which will be heeded
in the following lines:
"The election is coming on
Let us be pol i-tic
And everybody vote
.. For Panhandle Dick.
"Let us rally to our colors
And do it mighty quick
And everybody vote
For Panhandle Dick.
"Regardless of the weather
' Without a single kick
Let us all pull together
For Panhandle Dick."

ELKS WILL BUILD
Arrangements Being Made
Erection of Handsome
Home.
For
Negotiations are now under way
the completion of which but means
one more accession to the city of
Amarillo in the way of beautiful
buildfugs. Since the Elks lost their
home by fire some months ago they
have had under advisement the
erection of a modern building of
their own and have now designate
ed a committee which has in hand
this work. It is learned today that
a deal is on hand for a site and it
is expected that the trade will be
closed at once. As soon as this is
done plans will be made for the
building to be erected which when
completed will be one of the finest
in the city.
It has not been definitely decid
ed as yet whether the building
will be a three story or a two story
though it is understood that a num
ber of the members are in favor of
the former.
The "Elks' Home' ' will not only
be; one or the handsomest in the
state but in the southwest and
every convenience and luxury
known to Elkdom will be installed.
he building will be lighted by
electricity and heated by steam;
with reading and billiard rooms
an elaborately furnished parlor and
a spacious dance hall. The order
is very strong in Amarillo at pres-
ent having more than one hundred
and sixty members and applications
coming in fast. Financially they
are strong too and have ample
unds to . erect this modern and
handsome building.
