SWEETWATER, TCXAS
By Bud Wonbaai
Longhorn League Notes
Business Manager, Bill Lacy
of Del Rio is all on edge worry-
ing about whether or not the
San Angelo club will be pulled
off the financial shoals.
If San Angelo busts, Ije feels
certain Del Rio will be given
the gate by the league.
Ballinger, which outdrew each
of the Longhorn League towns
last summer, is sakl to be in
shaky financial shape also.
Chances are extremely good that
Ballinger sportsmen won't let
the club and franchise get out
of the Runnels county capitol.
Sweetwater's Sports are ex-
periencing a financial setback
also. There are few baseball en-
thusiasts in the town and the
gate receipts aren't what they
should be. More than 50 busi-
ness men in Our Town own
stock in the Sweetwater club.

"Ha! Jackson Night"
Tomorrow night, the Big
Spring Broncs come to Sweet-
water for a three-game stand
with the Sports. Our Town will
honor Hal Jackson at the first
game. This will be the first con-
test he will play in since his
operation a couple of weeks ago
at the Sweetwater Hospital for
an acute case of appendicitis.
Local merchants are expected
to contribute specific merchan-
dise to Hal in recognition of his
smooth playing for the Sports.
Any business establishment
wishing to donate to the Jack-
son cause may call John Leeson,
club business manager, at 3594.
The donations will go directly
to Hal for operation expenses
that he must cover. The Sweet-
water Baseball Club does not
pay for the operation costs
since "Stretch" was not injured
on the playing field.

Month of Champions
Middleweight Champion Rocky
Graziano and Tony Zale, a
couple of knockout specialists,
will have it out for the third
time in a title bout at Ruppert
Stadium in Newark, N. J..
Wednesday night.
The rubber match between
the two belters opens up the
"month of champions." On June
17 in Chicago, Welterweight
King Ray Robinson will defend
his crown against Bernie Docu-
sen. the New- Orleans jumping
jack, and on June 23, Joe Louis
will put his heavyweight title
on the line again with Jersey
Joe Walcott at Yankee Stadium.
Fishing Noles
Here are the latest fishing
reports:
S. W. Bonner and Earl Webb
hooked six large bass this morn-
ing between 6 and 7 o'clock at
Lake Sweetwater. The fish
weighed 28 pounds and 2 ounces.
H. E. Polk caught a four
pound gold fish at the Sweet-
water Lake Saturday morning.
Mr. Polk, used a dip net in haul-
ing up the solid gold speciman.

In two games over the week-
end the Sweetwater Sports won
one and lost one in clashes with
the Vernon Dusters in Vernon.
Saturday night, the Sports
blanked the Dusters 8 to 0 be-
hind the fireball hurling of
Frank Akers. The Vernon club
won Sunday afternoon, 8 to 5,
in a tightly played ball game.
These two clubs meet again to-
night to wind up a three-game
series.
Saturday's Game
"Cookie" Wiebel slammed out
a homer in the fourth inning
Saturday night with two aboard
as the Sports handed the Dus-
ters an 8-0 licking in the first
of a three-game stand.
The Dusters got in nine hits
off Sports hurler Akers, but he
tightened down when the bases
were occupied. He left nine
Dusters stranded on bags.
Kenny Peacock led the hitting
attack for Sweetwater as he
clouted three for five, including
two doubles. Pitcher Akers hit
a .500 average, hitting two for
four.
Sunday's (iume
Louis Ehlinger doubled in the
fifth inning with the bases load-
ed to ice away an 8-5 victory for
Vernon over Sweetwater in Sun-
day'^ contest. The long wallop
cleared the bases and Ehlinger
scored to give the Dusters four
runs in the frame. Up until his
hit. the score was deadlocked
at 3-3.
Kenny Peacock shared the
Sports' hitting lead with Ho-
ward Reynolds. Each player col-
lected three hits in five times
at bat.
Cotton McCaskey hit a home-
run with the bases empty in the
sixth, and added two singles to
lead the Vernon batters.
