had with highest Russian offi-
cials since late late last month.
They met separately with lesser
Russian authorities earlier to
arrange the series of confer-
ences.
Stalin has attended two of
the meetings, the first on Aug.
2 as the negotiators settled
down to work, and the second
on Monday nigh^ when, in a
five-hour session, he apparently
paved the way for the confer-
ences, which had almost reached
a stalemate, to continue.

sessions.
The western powers have
sought immediate lifting of
the future of Germany.
Russia apparently has made
counter-demands.
Reports have persisted this
week that the four powers are
near an agreement to bring the
problem of a Unified currency
for Berlin down to the level of
the allied commanders in Ger-
many. At present, both Soviet
and western-backed currency is
circulating in Berlin.
There also have been indica-
tions that some agreement which
might lead to a full-scale four-
power conference on the future
of Germany might near.

plied that the participation of
the T&P should be greater.
J. T. Suggs, general councellor
for the railroad told the group
that T&P had already pledged
itself to approximately $200,000
of the cost of the projects. This
would be about 25 per cent of the
estimated $800,000 total cost of
the underpass.
City Manager Hans Thorgrim-
sen points out that the Federal
Highway Act of 1948, which is es-
sentially a review of the High-
way Act of 1044 says, with refer-
ence to the distribution of fed-
eral highway funds, "of this ap-
propriation, 40 per cent is to be
used for the federal highway
system, 35 per cent to be used
for farm-to-market roads, 25 per
cent to be used ill certain desig-
nated urban areas."
City officials believe that
federal aid can lie obtained
through the last category of
the Higlnvay Act.
Representing the Texas and
Pacific Railroad at the meeting
yesterday were J. T. Suggs, chief
attorney; Harry Siler, executive
general agent; Harry Delane, gen-
eral agent from Abilene; and F.
B. Danford, assistant chief engi-
neer.
Local delegation included May-
or J. C. Pace, Jr., M. C. Alston,
Dr. R. O. Peters, Ney Sheridan,
Jr., Rig Edwards, Lester Reeves
ana City Manager Thorgrimsen.

pard also met with the local
group.
An executive session was held
by local representatives and T-
&P officials from 7 a.m. until 10
a.m. Thursday morning to plan
their presentation to the High-
way Commission and Thorgrim-

for the group. The session with

CANDIDATES
(Continued From Page One)
finished his campaign by au#>-
mobile.
Stevenson broke a political
practice of 34 years by acknowl-
edging an opponent. In every
other race of his career — a
career in which he has never
been defeated—Stevenson has
ignored his opposition and "let
them talk themselves out of the
race."
Johnson, celebrating his 40th
birthday anniversary today, has
nailed his campaign to a plat-
form of "peace, progress and
preparedness."
Stevenson, heralding himself
as a candidate unfettered by
campaign promises, has pledged
himself to fight for a reduction
in federal taxes.
Each candidate has accused
the other of having labor back-
ing.
Meantime, the CIO-PAC has
snubbed both men by compar-
ing the senatorial race with a
butcher's counter on late Satur-
day afternoon:
"A sorry choice," snapped the
CIO, "either way."
For the final day of the cam-
paign, Stevenson returned to
his campagn headquarters in
this capitol city. He scheduled
a statewide, election eve broad-
cast for tonight.
Johnson, swinging south af-
ter a day of handshaking in
Dallas, headed for a final round
of campaigning in San Antonio.
What the vote tomorrow
might be was a moot question.
In the first primary, 1,202,-
000 ballots were cast.
For tomorrow, most observers
pegged the probable vote some-
where between 700,000 and 900,-
000.
