Gridiron Parly Is
Funny Satire Upon
National Affairs
WASHINGTON (UP) — If
President Truman and a lot of
assorted Democrats and Repub-
licans are wearing long red ears,
blame it on the Washington
preezwerps.
The newsmen got their chance
to put the politicians in the pan
tonight at the gridiron club's
spring dinner-show, devoted to
lampooning the foibles and fol-
lies of officialdom.
In a rapid-fire series of musi-
cal skits ar.d sketches inspired
by official mishaps of the past
few months, they handed a
mirthful ribbing to Mr. Truman
and 500 other guests crowded in-
to the grand ballroom of the
Statler F lotol here.
The president was kidded about
the "welfare state" and his feud
with Virginia's democratic Sen.
Harry F. Byrd, who was in the
audience. Actors recalled a few
;if Mr. Truman's 1948 campaign
promises.
"The Communists were to be
| (riven out—and already Gerhart
. fiisler is gone. The farmer was to
j >e helped more- and already the
I price of corn has reached a
level where he can afford to eat
it. It appears that the national
rlebt will be paid off and the
Taft-Hartley act repealed at
about the same time."
The Gridiron Club president
also had a few caustic words for
Congress.
"The Democratic 81st Con-
gress lias proved its superiority
over the Republican 80!h. It
! does less . . . quicker."
In the recent special congres-
sional election in New York City
"Franklin D. Roosevelt" Jr., has
I won a seat in Congress," said
' Wilson, "amid Republican warn-
ings: 'Hold onto your hats boys,
| here we go agin.' "
