Circumstances in tho last few days have
inado me acquainted with the loll wing
acts:
Arkansas was admitted into the Cnlon In
KK1. The first Legislature of tho new
Mate assembled In the fall of that year
i dm Wilson a Representative from Clark
county of which Arkadelphia Is the county
aeat was elected speaker of the House.
John w llson was a rich planter of line

Governor Conway however reconvened
the Legislature in extraordinary session on
thetitb of November 1K.17. There were
many questions before that body but
among tliem was a measure to leiv a pre-
mium on wolf scalps. John Wilson the
Speaker was president of the Statu Hank.
While (lis bill was pending a number ot
amendments were oil'ercd most of which
were designed to burlesque it.
Anion; others Mr. Anthony moved
that instead of a magistrate's
certificate to a wolf scalp it should require
that of the "President of the Ileal Hstale
Hank" meaning tho Speaker John W il-
son. This thrust was so palpable so directly
aimed at the presiding oflicer of the House
who was tho President of the bank named
that he called antlber member tothet hair
descended to the floor nnd advanced
towards J. J. Anthony tho Representative
from Randolph County. Anthony rose
from his seat drew a llowio knife and stood
on the defensive. They met and fought
unto death. Wilson's wrist was cut in
tirain and he made a cripple
for life. Anthony was killed.
No other such sceno bus ever happened in
American legislative bodies. 1'p to the last
moment the spectators thought Wilson
and not Anthony would bo killed. An-
thony fell and Wilson was left a crippln fo-
life. "
Wilson carried t his hotel supposed to
be a dying man dictated for be could not
write.'his resignation as a member of the
House of Representatives and of course as
Speaker.
Rut the excitement was great the heart
of thecountry regardless of provocations
went out to the dead man and tho House
after a preamble adopted the following res-
olution by a vote of thirty-six to four:
lie it resolved by this House That the
Hon. John Wilson a member of this
House from thecoiinty of Clark ami Spenk-
erof this House lie andthii same is hereby
expelled as a member of this House
Adopted. Yeas 3d ; nays 4.
Hut at the next election 1 lie people 'of
Clark county reelected John Wilson as
their representative and he served ns such
but receiving the cold shoulder of many
old friends lie left Arkansas and settled in
Howie county Texas lit! stood for the
Legislature iu 1S47 against Hardin It. Run-
nels afterwards Governor of the State and
contested Runnels' seat but lost his claim.
A liltle later he went to California and
spent three or four years in that country.
Returning lie bought n section of land in
Dallas county near Cedar Hill and there
died in the 'full conviction that his whole
life bad been honorable und true to his
country.
When the true history of the Southwest
shall lie written alter you and I Mr. Kd-
itor nro gone the true character of John
Wilson will be made known as that ot a
high-toned straight-forward pioneer of the
Seulhwest. I never saw him; personally
know untiling about him hut 1 love justice
and am a devotee to the truth of history.
Ho lived and died in Dallas county before' t
came hern. His hhii mm a gallant 'Lieuten-
ant in ihirlord's regiment during the late
war and is nownii honest unpretending
but hospitable farmer near Cedar Hill in
