Senator Van Wyck of Nebraska has in-
troduced a bill in the senate the object of
which is to compel the railroads to pay
state taxes on unpatented Mauds donated to
them by the government" One condition
of the hind grunts is tii.it the railroads
shall puv all costs of surveying the lands.
The railroad companies hold lands througu-
out the west which they have not yet sur-
veyed and patented and the courts have
held that the state cannot tax these
hinds because the I'uiled States still
holds an interest in eouitv in them bv
reason of the fact that under tho conditions
imposed by the grunt the lands might re-
vert to the government through the failure
of the railroads to comply Willi ihcse con-
ditions. It is claimed that the railroads
leave the lauds unpatented to uvoid taxa
tion and Mr. Van Wyi k's bill releases and
quit-claims to any state that proceeds
against these lands lr the collection of
taxes all interest in equity of the general
government. It is thouglu this will en-
courage tlie states to collect these taxes.
In the. early days of railroading in .Mis
souri u six-toot stranger with a bad look in
his eye one day entered a station on the
line ol the lUiink A . Dash road pulled out
ten shares of slock in the company and in-
quired of the station-master if there were
unv dividends on the stock.
"Never heard of any" was the reply.
"Didn't anybody ever try to collect divi-
dends ?"
"If liiey did they didn't get anything."
"The stock ought to pay 10 pVr cent."
continued the stranger "llere s $1000; 10
per cent a year would bo jum. I've held
these sheers three months which would be
fil. l'ardner 1 want my divy!"
"Hut I've nothing lo do with il! You
must go to St Louis."
' Too fur away. I'm going to collect horo
and save time. l'ih;riii count out my
divy!"
1 he nbove peroration was lollowed by tho
sight ol a six-shooter and on expression
which inuiint business and the agent didn't
consume three minutes counting out the
nioiiev which the stranger took and walked
out with the remark that he never invested
in any stock paying less than In per cent.
and didn't believe in cumulative dividends.
This was the only dividend paid by that
road for thirteen years and the agent on a
salary ol jlu per mouth had to stand that
