The bar of Sherman will miss "HoneBt
Old Joe" as he is generally called with
much regret from the bench of this dis-
trict. Even those who differ with him are
compelled to admit his honesty his index-
ible independence of character and his
sound legal learning.
A crank attempted to preach to a small
audience of about a dozen in the court-
house Sunday ereninir on the emphatic
subject "Hell and the Devil." His dilapi-
dated garments his tattered shoes und his
wild-restless eyes point him out as an
escaped lunatic or an unfortunate half
starved tramp in search ol back-door sand-
wiches. He carried about with him the
bottom of a pasteboard shirt box on
whioh was transcribed in a bold
handwriting some down or more rod-
hot texts but his slim audience
on "Hell and the Devil" has probnbly dia
cnuraged him from a further pursuit ol his
very orthodox series.
A young lad named Joliny' Hutchcraft
not long iu bis teens has been arrested hero
for burglary and put in jail. The evidence
is pretty strong that the boy deliberately
unlocked the door of a neighbor's house
While the lady thereof was absent with a
key that unlocked the front door' of his own
iamlly residence ontered the premises and
extracted 20 in moiicv theroirom. Ho
came up town and purchased a suit of
clothes and exhibited just tho amount of
money missing it is sum the inuy can
.identify a ten dollar-bill ot the money
taken. What a pity that we havcno house ol
correction to Bend such boys to that they
might be reformed instead of hardened by
being brought iu daily contact with tho
most hardened criminals and no mind cul-
ture administered. The dread of the peni-
tentiary door does uot stop the thief from
executing bis plans. He does not seem to
think of this.until an oilieor unexpectedly
' places a hand ou bin shoulder. And if any
one will look at tho striped gangs working
in brickyards ou plantations and railroads
in this state from oarly morn till dewy
. eve and tell ns where reformation
comos in we will show him a white
ripe blackberry. Nine times out
of ten when tho boy's term of service
isondedheis a more confirmed criminal
than when his head was first shaved.
The rumor that a variety theatre anil bar
was to be opened in the old Continental
hotel near the Union depot tnrns out to bo
a canard. It was merely a trick of tho own-
er of the property to sen It to a man who
is running the only saloon iu that immedi-
ate vicinity. The ruse worked well. The
owner sold the old frame at a good figure.
The little child of Mr. and Mrs. P. W.
Dolan died yesterday evening after a long
and severe ulnesj and was buried to-day.
The mother is the only daughter of-( apt.
0. W. llatsell of this oity and is herself ly-
ing in a very precarious condition with a
fast wasting pulmonary complaint.
The heavy grain trade continues unabat-
ed. Over four thousand bushels of wheat
were marketed here .Saturday and nearly
seven thousand bushels yesterday muking
over eleven thousand bushels in two days.
Receipts to date nearly 47000 bushels ol
now crop. 1'resent price from U0 to U3o. for
good article. Late oats Is somewhat dam-
aged by rust but the crop is immense.
Yours "Jinks."
