of the church and has been peacefully ap-

Lieutenant Berry's olllcial report of the

ligent vigorous and systematic effort was
niado to save the vessel. The hatches wet
promptly closed two streams were brought

the contest was maintained lor seventeen
hours.' The retreat to the shore was con

was filled with young Ice and when tne
burning ship was finally deserted it was
swept out of the harbor ablaze from end to
end. It is evident that the Rodgers could
not have been uved after the Humes were
discovered. It does not follow that
the fire could not have beorf pre
vented if proper vigilcnce had been tier-

seems strange that some precautions had
not been taken 'to protect the timbers.
