the cloud is three or four miles oil' when
discovered it Is generally practicable to
get beyond the path of it before It
reaches the place where tho observer
stood. Under no circumstances should
one move to the east iiortljoMt or
southwost. Many foolhardy acts have
beon committed (perhaps through Jear
and excitement or positive iyuorance)
by persons which have resulted iurieaUi
or terrible injuries because thoy have
tried to rttu in front of the tornado
cloud thinkiiiK they could outstrip it lu
such a race. Others have attempted to
cross tho path just abend of the advanc-
ing cloud feeling that they could reach
a salo distance on the opposite side be-
fore tho funnel-shaped monster passed
in one of our late storms a person es-
sayed this trip with two horses and a
lumber wajjou conlident that he could
at loast rush his horses across the ap-
parently narrow path of storm which
scorned to progress within such circum-
scribed limits lie was iuuLautly killed
one of his horsoB dreadfully mangled
the other seriously injured and tho
wapm a totaljwreck.
Since we cannot resist tho power of
the tornado the question now Bugtre.sts
itself what precautionary measures
can bo taken? That which remains to
be done can be accomplished in an un-
ostentatious and quiet but secure man-
ner. 10 very man can aud should con-
struct a "dug-out" at soino sultablo
point within a convenient distance of
Ids house. If a person is situa'.ed
within a town or city let him select
some portion of his yard lor the pnr-Ik-ha
but if residing lu tho country ho
will not lie couliuou to narrow limits in
t'-o soloctiou of a desirable location.
Where a person living in a village haa
no yard he must if he has a cellar eou-
dtruct a cellar-cave as a means of pro-
tection to be described further on.
With respect to the "dug-out" in no
event should the roof be other than
lot el with the surface of the earth; in
tact it Is highly dosirable that tho re-
treat Bhould be so constructed that the
ordinary surl'are of tho oarth would
form tho roof or covering aud that all
preparation of the domicile proceed by
way of excavation and supports from
bonnath. As to location there Is not
muoh ti bo said tho most important

In caie you are possessed of a build-
ing that has no dug-out or cellar cave
your best plan ia to move from your
house or from the location where you
are as dlreotod iu the previous sections.
If not able to benefit by those directions
rotreat instantly to your collar aud
place yourself face forward against the
west wall. This Is the best position 111
any cellar. If for any reason you can
not get to the wont wa.l take your po-
sition (the next best) face forward
against the south wall but as near the
southwest comer as possible. In case
the building. Is removed from the foun-
dation It will always lie carried almve
and over you or If turn to pieces the do
bris will be instantly removed to the
eastward. Under no circumstances
whether in a bulling or a
cellar take a position lu a northeast
room lu a nortuean corner in an east
room or against an east wall. Keineiu-
Iter that the tornado cloud invariably
move lu a northeasterly direction. Per-
sons have lieen Instantly killed or terri-
bly crippled for no other reason than
that they Iguorautlv threw themselv.m
In the very grasp of tlio monster cloud.
The rulo regarding the movement to
the northeast must be obeyed. The
norths tat quarter Is a fatal position
whatever may be said about destruction
to life or propurly iu auy other. If un-
fortunately yon sre elose pressed by
the advancing cloud never remain
standing and attempt to weather the
storm but throw youmnlf prone (lace
downward) upon ti e gi.miid head to
east and arms ovn the bead to protect
It. If you ahould chance to be near a
large stone or stump or some heavy
low object firmly linberv1 to the
ground take a position directly to the
east of it lying prone upon the ground
head toward the object protecting the
former with your folded arms. This ad-
vice is given in tho event of extreme
necessity whileother and better oppor-
tunities are unavailable or have be-
come foifolted. It is better if possible
never to trust yourself behind or
about any movable object located
within the center of the storm's path;
by all moans not a tree or anything that
rises some distance above the sur lace of
the ground. If you can get out never
remain in a house or any other build-
ing that is at all likely to be torn down
or removed from its foundation. If
forcod to remain in a building without
a ceiiar always mke a position against
the west or south wall (bettor the
former) either Iprone (lace downward)
upon the lioor or islanding with your
buck to the wall.
In any building always take your
final position on tho first or ground floor
or in the cellar. lSever stand or lie in
front of a door or window or near a
stove or heavy pieco of furniture. Make
every effort to got into the west room
and if possible bofore tho onslaught
remove all furniture from the western
portion. If you have tho necessary
time shut tightly every window and
door in the building within which you
may bo localt d at the time of tho storm.
Never take refuge In a forest iu a small
grove of trees in an orchard in a build-
ing or near a fence of any kind unless
such obstruction is entirely out of the
lino of the storm. If possible always
opeutho doors of your out-buildings
and lot your stock loose driving them
to tho north as bofore directed..
