' The thirty first legislature was
called to order in Austin last
Tuesday at.noon and before the
end of this week the bills will be-
gin to bob up and the solons will
soon be up to their ears in work.
The senate was qui :kly organ-
ized on the first day by the elec-
tion of officers, among them bet-
ing Capt. D. F. Hughes as assist-
ant sergeant at arms, and Mrs.
Hope Hawkins, formerly of
Groesbeck, as stenographer.
In the house they did not work
so fast.
Capt. w. F. Davie, well known
in Limestone county, in his offi-
cial capacity as secretary of the
state, called the house to order
and after members had been
sworn in,announced the first bus-
iness to be^the election of a
speaker.
Hon. John A. Mobley of Hen-
derson county, and Hon. A. M.
Kennedy of McLennan county
were placed in nomination and
Mr Kennedy won by six votes,
the vote being Kennedy 69, Mob-
ley 63

months duration rest came to
Mrs. A. J. Biddle at the residence
of her daughter yesterday. Mrs.
F. L. Sheeks, where she and Mr.
Biddle have resided since June,
Surrounded by loved ones and
close friends, her life went out
in the spirit in which she had
lived it, Full of love for her God,
her family and humanity.
Mrs. Biddle was born in Foun-
tain county, Indiana, April 7,
1839, Martha A. Kelly. She
married Abraham J. Biddle De-
cember 3, 1862, who survives
her Two children were born to
this union, one, Mamie, who
died in 1880 at the early age of 6
years. The other, Allie, Mrs.
F. L. Sheeks, who resides in this
city. Besides the bereaved hus-
band and daughter she leaves an
only sister, Mrs. S. P. Snider,
also of Beaumont.
Mrs. Biddle has been a resi-
dent of Texas since 1886, moving
to Beaumont in 1903. Early in
life she united with the Metho-
dist church, of which she has
always been a useful and con-
sistent member. She was close-
ly identified with the First
church of Beaumont and an ac-
tive member of the Home Mis-
sion Society until her health
failed and then from her sick
