Steel Shores Surge
Upward On Market
NEW YORK, Feb. 1 (UP)-
United States steel common'
stock, the leader of many an
upsurge in market history, led
the share market to new iiiflh
ground for more than tpr
years today. ,
The company reported a tnew
20-year high in net profit for
1919 and raised its dividend
from 50 cents a share to 65
cents a share after the close yes-
terday. The issue rose today to
$29.75, a new high since 1946
on the basis of the old stock
split three-for-one last Jur.e,
Other sections of the list
rose before "Big Steel" ojiened
and ruled strong thereafter.
First hour sales rose to 410,000
shares, a rate of more than 2,-
000,000 shares for a full day.
Excitement died down before
noon but prices ruled firm
around the best since 1946.
