by Mrs Vernon Hartsch Mrs

on the Bastrop County Wel-

ladies. Governor Briscoe ask
ed the help of each citizen in
Texas to support state child
abuse programs and to report
any known cases of chik abuse
to the welfare department as
soon as possible
The abused and battered
child is not a pretty picture,
Mrs Martinez stated, huv
ever there are approximately
2,000 known cases in the state
yearly ami only a fraction

weekly from abuse and most
iy inflicted by people in their
own homes; by mothers, step
parents, or other relatives
Some chiidreu are abused by
the cycle pattern which is
repeated The parent was ab-
used, the parent then abuses
his child, because thev don't
know any better Some children
are abused by |wrents or other
adults under tension, emotion-
ally ill often well meaning ad-
ults, who need help them-
selves or by adults on drugs
or alcohol Some parents are
immature, irresponsible or
became pat cuts t<*> soon An
abuse case is described as an
intentional abuse inflicted on
the child
As the awarness «t the ex

problem grows, more cases
will be reported, and more
lives will be saved

investigate each report re-
ceived and then try to help the
child and family
If abuse is evident the child
will be placed in a foster
home or up for adoption re-
garding the conditions of the
case
The welfare department
does much wor k and the case
worker is on call twenty four
hours a day if needed, but
much more needs to be done,
Mrs Martinez stated She
said ' you and your decisions
concerning laws on child abuse
are important, and we newt
you and your interest and
help More hosier Homes are
needed," she said, "because
we do not like to place a child
m an institution When this
happens the child has the ten-
dency to become institution-
alized, and later is unable to
relate to family life.
In closing Mrs Martinez
said go home and each day look
at your children and be thank
ftil for the wonderful gifts

remember the abandoned, hurt
emotionally disturbed child,
who is ahused and neglected
and pray dally for me, that I
make the right decisions in my
work for the welfare of each
child She said, 'remember
the first step to correcting the
child abuse problem is to
report the case This can be
a matter of lite or death "
Mrs Vernon Bartsch gave
$112 00 to Mrs Martinez the
sum collected in Sacred
Heart Parish. Ro&ne, to be
used to buy Christmas gifts for
the Foster Children of Bus
trop County Mrs Bartsch was
in charge of the drive held
December 6 and 7 In thank
ing the ladies for the gift. Mis
Martinez stated that the money
was gratefully accepted, and
would be put to good use in
buying gifts for these needy
children

music after the banquet
After everyone had eaten
the winner of the Sweetheart
Contest, Sally Malone, was
presented. The other
nominees were also recogniz-
ed and presented with nice
