November 8, 1995 VCCA Fellowship Outreach Project Box VCCA Sweet Briar, VA 24595 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I am very pleased to offer my enthusiastic endorsement of Sterling Houston for participation in your fellowship program. I have known Sterling for several years. I know him as a gifted and spirited playwright and actor, whose pieces have always been right on target with our local community's trials, tribulations and aspirations. Our department has seen fit to award Sterling grants that have enabled him to complete and produce two original works. I should note that Sterling is also highly respected in theater circles outside of San Antonio. His founding work with Jump Start Performance Company has been a life's work to be very proud of. He and his colleagues have been at the forefront in establishing performance art and alternative theater in our city, an endeavor that has greatly enriched our community's cultural life. I also know Sterling as a member of our department's peer review panels. We depend on citizen volunteers to assist us in making difficult funding decisions, and I can tell you that Sterling has handled his duties very thoughtfully and fairly. His level of community participation is exemplary. I am confident that Sterling will make absolutely the best out of his time spent in your fellowship program. Given the opportunity to reflect and write, I know that he will produce in ways that will benefit many artists, particularly those of color, in our communities. I, again, wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Houston to you. Thanks you for your attention in this matter. Please feel free to call me: (210) 222-2787. Sincerely your Eduardo Diaz Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs (Iff Of UN ANIONIQ DfHknifM Of HTS & (UUUUl AfUIHS
