State Capital Notes.
Austin Jan. 11. The Winship
Manufacturing Company of Corsi-
caua with a capital of $.10000 Med a
charter to-day.
Mr. Lndd of Kuusns City ngent for
Robert Burnett and other European
capitalists paid into tho treasury to-
day $147000 ou school lands in Dick-
ens and Garza counties. This is ono
of tho largest single payments nuulo
to tho Stato for some time past and
goes to tho credit of the permanent
school fund.
A wreck of a freight train ou the
Houston & Texas Central is reported
here to-day as occuring near l'uige
Where a north bound freight train
had a rear collision with a construction
train left upon the main track. Some
six or soven cars were derailed but no
accident to life or limb is reported.
The collision caused tho springing of
the throttle on the engino of the con-
struction train sending it oiT without
a crew but as littlo water was in the
boiler no danger Is apprehended from
a wild train. Tho wreck has caused a
delay in passenger trains.
Gould Interviewed.
St. Louis Jan. 11. Jay Gould ar-
rived In this city yesterday and from
here will go south oror his railroad
lines on a tour of inspection. In an
interview Mr. Gould said he was not
actively interested in Wabash
affairs but was interested in
having now separate lines work
harmoniously and in an ultimate
reorganization of the system. He
also said neither tho Missouri Pacific
nor tho Texas TacKlc would make any
extensions until the fate of tho inter-
state commerce bill should bo decided.
He considered that if the bill passed
it would greatly Injure the
general interests of the west as
well as its railroad business. He was
not prepared to go into details on tho
subject but would vouturo tho aser
tlon that should tho bill pass it would
take but a very few years to convluco
tho public it was au unwlso measure.

tablishment.
Houston Jan. 11. A called meet-
ins: in the interest of a slaughterhouse
in this city was held at the Cotton
Exchaugo Monday morning and a
committee appointed to attend tho
Cattlemen's Convention at Dallas.
A committee of twelve was also
appointed to meet stockmen who came
to Houston by invitation of tho Dal
las committee
The president T. W. House stated
that he had arranged through the
liberality of Receiver Dillingham for
transportation for tho committee over
the Central to Dallas in a spocial car.
Burned to Death.
Lononiew Jan. 11. Ann Cooper a
colored woman living about two miles
east ot town made a largo Are in her
her fireplace pulled tho bunk contain
ing her littlo S-year-uld boy in front
of the fire and loft tho house. A few
hours afterward soino neighbors en
tered the house and found both the
bunk and the child burned to a crisp.
The charred remains of tho child were
buried yesterday.
Arrested for Smuggling and Property
Confiscated.
El Paso Jan. 12. II. O. Rclnhardt
who represents a machinery and im-
plement firm of Chicago hal some
goods seized and confiscated by Col-
lector Magoffin yesterday. The driver
who attempted to bring the merchan-
dise for Iteinhardt from Paso del
Norte loses bis horses baruess and
hack. He is in jail charged with smug-
gling. It will take $237 to release the
confiscated property. Criminal pro.
cceding may be stopped by direction
of the secretary of the treasury. There
is so much smuggling being done here
the officers are vigilant and make offen-
ders suffer when caught
Waoo Notes.
Waco Jan. 11. In the case of T. J.
Crew vs. the Missouri Pacific Railway
damage was allowed plaintiff1 yester-
day in the sum of $150 for damage to
pasture oy fire from an engine on that
road burning gran from bis land.
The Central Texas Medical Associa-
tion meets here to-day to more thor-
oughly perfect their organization.
