I'M C. Smith this 'morning nnd pro
pounded a few pertinent iictious to
him:
''Mr. Sinitb. if you huvono objec-
tions I won. d like to ask you a lew
quest Ions as tho public s anxious lo
know bow you stand on certain mut-
ters since you arc a enndidate for
inayor?".
"Firo away sir.'
"What do you think about a 'busi-
ness man' lor mayoi?''
"Dallas needs a business man for
mayor but ahovo all wo need a piacti
cal one; and I see no renson whv one perate fugitive from justice and it be-
busincss should lit a mau for Hie pti- camo his duty to And him remote as he
lion more than another. Dallas needs
an energetic fearless practical man
with a reasonable share of common
sense at tho head of iter nll'alrs"
"Arc you a free school uinu?"
"Yes 1 urn a free school man ami
believe tlio safety of American insti-
tutions lies iu tlio education of the
masses and I want Dallas to keep her
school facilities fully up to the de-
mand." "Dnllas sidewalks aud streets arc nt-
trnctiiig a good denl of attention.
What is your position?''
"Solidly in luvorof good streets a id
especially of good side-walks nnd I
know that wo have laws if they wee
enforced to make them nt least passa-
ble; as it is tho aro as naturo made
them iu iimnv places on our mostly
traveled streets and while the farming
community has suffered for want of
rain their calamity lias been a Cod

sisled nature in her side-walk business

No sir I am most positively
"l'" !
nosed to the sale of tho works. In tin
lirst place I can tee but one d. aw back
to the lulling growth of Dallas mid
that is the water supply nnd t lie city j
can't n fiord to loose money on an in-
terest of so vital importance. It is u j
dutv tbe city government owes her
citi.et'S to go abend aad perfect- the
system and n it slop io ai-k whether or
not tlio works will tie a source of rev
enue to the city. Our city lias n ways
kepi far ahead of her public im r jvc-
ments and We should at least make nil
effort to bo ready for a population wc
may rcn-ouubly expect. I am In fa
vor of nono but substantial improve-
m.utsHiid think it a treat lack ol
economy to use anything but bi ick or
stone f jr culverts and iron for bridges.
"Would you if elected devote your
time to the offico of mayor?"
"Certainly; I think it will take all of
a inau's time if lie makes a live mayor
as he should not only know what is
going on in every department of the
city governmcu" but ho should also
know what is going on iu each ward
and while tho mnn who is elected may
not be a 'business man' if ho does hit
'July he will bo a busy ouc.'"
