CONQUERED AND 00NQUEK0R3
The Contempt In T7hleb the Arabs
of Algeria Hold Their Trench
Rulers.
At that ball as during the whole of
my stay in Algeria nothing aston'shod
nie more than the evident contempt en-
tertained by the conquered for their
conquerors; but they seemed inclined
to make no effort to throw off the yoke.
It Is as if they folt that they were eon-
quored not by tho French but by soma
inevitable fate to whose decree they
must bow with unquestioning submis-
sion. On tho other hand tho effort
which the French make to conciliate
the Arabs are almost abjoot In the fer-
vor of their humility. That evening
if one of the sheiks condescended to
stroll Into the ball-room half a dozen
official personages advanoed to bid him
welcome; the governor and his wife
overwhelmed him with attention; and
a speoial officer was told off to walk by
his Bide and give him any information
he might require. If this were done
in the hope of cxoitlng gratitiulo II
was labor in vain; the sheik recoived
tho advances of his entertainers will
stately courtesy but evidently regarded
all homago as his just due.
Nor is it only in the palace that this
extraordinary inversion of tho usual
relationship between tho conquered
and tho conquerors exists; in the
streets public assemblies everywhere
tho same efforts aro mado by the
French officials to avoid all causo ol
offonse. Tho gendarmerie and tho sol-
diers are literally hidden away in dark
nooks and caves lest thoir presonec
should wound tho susceptibilities of the
native race; and on the few occasion
which they mu.st nocoswnrily be brought
to the fore apparently they receive
private instructions that tho Arabs are
not to bo subjected to any of those
petty tyrannies which it so dulighli
tho soul of a French official to prac
tice on his own countrymen. An
amusing isustanco of this occured at the
Anglers races n fow days aftor the
ball. A part of the ground near the
grand stand was surroundod by a red
cord as n sign that tho public was ox
eluded. Through some misunderstand-
ing a motley crowd of Europeans broke
down tho rod cord and crowded lute
tho resorved space. Tho gendarmes
bristling with furry rode into thoir
midst and striking right and loft with
perfectly unnecessary violenco drove
the people away. Some half-hour lator
the same thing oocurod; again the red
cord foil and a crowd took possession
of tho reserved ground; but this time
tho crowd was Arab evidently the
poorest class but still Arab. I expect
ed a repetition of the form or scone bill
to my astonishment one gordaruie
looked at another ho mado a s'gn tc
the third who looked for directions tc
a fourth; but no ono ventured to ad
dress tho Intruders.
At length some official of important
was sent for and after considerable tie
lay hesitation and consultution thie
person did summon sufficient courage
to ride up to tho iuclosurer but fai
from there being any signs of the vio-
lence and abuse to which the Europe
ans bad boon subjected he bowed to the
Arabs as if they were sovorign prince
and he the most lowly of their subject?.
In the blaudest of tones he apologized
for disturbing them and entered intc
elaborate cxpliiualion of tho why aud
wherefore of the case; but all his pray
era and entreaties were in vain. The
Arabs listenod to what he said with a
courtesy equal to his own; the sac
gravity of their faces never relaxed
but move they would not and did not;
and at longth tlio officer rode away
with a gesture of despair and gave
orders that they were to be left In ros
session of the wound!- All Hie Year

saw whilo out riding a fow miles west
of this villap- last Sunday afternoon
takes thoiu all down. They had just
passed a house in a rear lot adjoining
which was a bog lot in which were
Rome large hogs. In tho lot among the
hogs was a young miss of good size
who was amusing herself ou Sunday
afternoon riding the hogs around the
lot. Sbo would very frequently tumble
