To-day's Intolligoneer which is
now regarded as tho Executivo or-
gan has tho following : "Wo have
authority for tho statomont that at
a vory recent consultation of tho
Cubinot it was decided that tho
military officers in command of tho
five districts into which tho ton un-
represented Southftrn States woro
dividod havo no power to remove
civil officers doming their authori-
ty from tho Stato Governments as
now organizod. Tho question we
understand therefore tho. Cabinet
hnd more immediate reforenco to
was tho romoval of tho Governor
and other civil officers of tho Stato
of Louisiana. by Gen. Shoridnn but
of courso will apply to the action of
the other four commandors.
No doubttho forthcoming opinion
of tho Attorney General in accord-
ance with tho reasoning of which it
is understood tho decision referrod
to was arrived at will fully justify
tho logaiity and propriety of this
determination. It need scarcely be
suggested that the issuing of orders
replacing tho deposed officors which
may become necessary as a cons-
qucn co ot this docision or tho tfov-
ornmont would bo no good ground
for application on tho part of Gon-
cral Sheridan to bo relieved from
tho position which he now holds.
mucli loss would it warrant the in-
feronco that the Administration
contemplates or dosiros his romoval
for his error.
We feel authorized to say that tho
speculations of sonsatton journals
unon this point howovor they may
bo attempted to be supported by
imaginod political manouvros on the
part ot either tbo menus or onomics
of tho Gouornl's thoy aro wholly
without foundation.
The Jury for Surratt's trial is
progressing. The pannel will most
probably bo completod to-day.
Horrible Story.
A snip OF DEATH floats into a port
OF THE SHETLAND ISI.AND8.
Since the time when the Ancient
Mariner told the terrible tale of the
curse-laden ship with her crew of
ghastly corpses no more thriling
story of tho sea has teen related
than that of tho whalo-ship Diana
that recently drifted into one of the
Shetland Islands. A year ago she
loft tho Shetlands on a whaling
voyage to the Arctic Regions hav-
ing on board fifty men. From that
time nothing more waa heard from
bcr. The frionds of thoso on board
became alarmed. Money waa rais-
ed and premiums offered to the first
vessel that would bring tidings of
tho missing ship but alt to no avail.
llopo was almost abandoned.
On the 2d of April the people
near Rona's Voe in one of the Shet-
land lutes were startled at seeing
a ghastly wreck of a ship sailing
into the harbor. Battered and ice-
crufchod sails and cordage cut way
boats and soars cut up for fuel in
the terrible Arctic winter ber docks
covered with dead and dying the
lot: T lost Diana nailed in like a ship
