kerosene lamp by oUerviog th following
directions.
1st. Keep Ihe lamp clean; that is occa-
sionally wash it out with warm aoap suds
being particular to dry thoroughly before
refilling.
2nd. Change At wick a oftca ss one

easily in ihe lubeeven If it becomes nec-
essary to draw oul a few strands of th
wick. When a wick I loo light the flow
of oil is obstructed and lb "lamp smoke"
or ihe wick becomes encrusted.
8rd. Night lamps. The practice of
turnlug down lb wick as is done by many
who wish lo keep a 'icbt at night should
be avoided. Lamp ar eontrtieied npon
a principle which aims lo produo the
greatest qttanlily of light not lbs least.
When th wick I turned loo high His sup-
ply of air furnished by means of Ihe per-
forations at the base of the burner Is nol
sufficient lo produce perfect enmbuslion ;
bene Ihe "lamp smokes. lien oa me
contrary Ihe wick Is turned down lor a
small flame the supply of air becomes too
great and Instead ol being consumed as It
should be it become charged aa It were
with the vapor from III flame causing Ihe
emission of an unpleasant odor arising
entirely from Imperfect combustion. To
obviate this in tho mailer of night lamps
only such should' bo used as will not give
too much light wnen Burning wnn a iuii
flame. Small lamps adapted for this pur-
nose can be obtained from any dealer and
are by us iirgontly reconeoded.

etc Let our people greet all immigrants
cordially; and above all let our people
refrain from extortionate charges for sup

sufficient. If we are to have a great pop

must take an active part in making 1'. so.

that the Chinese and other laborers were
all worklug harmoniously."
We gave the rumor on the faith of sev

about the time who stated it as a fact.
