Our reporter being sent upon the mission
yesterday of writing up the decorated build-
ings npon Elm and Main streets began at
the loot ol Elm and followed ll up on both
aides to near East Dallas where decorationa
ceased and then came down Main street
both sides to the Herald ofilce.
Beginning at the foot of Elm street ou
reporter found one elegant building beauti-
fully decorated with a large United States
dig on the crown ot the parapet with
smaller ones about tne trnnt and with ever-
green wreaths all ubout the awnings of the
building with clusters ol suiuli Hugs inter-
mingled the evergreeus being dotted with
parti colored streamers.
Messrs. Schneider & Davis being the
next building it was tound co be a
buwvrot beuuty aud lovllness. Tne decora-
tions iiibiuo the building were not so ela-
borate cotisislitig principally of a tastelul
arraugeuient ot goods ami Dowerets Ou
hu outMde the ornamentation was
fuller. On the puiacle of the tine parapet
was u Uiiiuii lla and uu the little turrets
all around the wall were smaller Union
tides lielow ou ihe iroutofthe second
stoiy were wreathes rf evergreens and
paru-ciiloied imi.er iestoous with two
Texas stars one in blue and one in red
surrounded with variairated wreaths
Hanging to the awning or balcODy were
wreaths of cedar wit b circlets of evergreens
pendant ana red una white ana blue
streamers attached. This balcony so doc
orated extends trom the entire front
around the entire Market street front
About the tops of the windows numerous
festoons with white red and blue streamers
are to be seen and the corner of the build-
ing is a magnificent Texas star of white
and blue encircled by a wreath ol various
colored clusterings.
Next on the right of the street
was a number of buildings extended to
Sanger Bros. all decorated about alike with
evergreen lestoons nags small ana large
and on the north side ot Elm in the op
posite block most of the houses some hav
ing no decorations at all were ornamented
ol
in some way the only dillerence in anv
them being that a )nie had more flags and
some more evergreens.
Crossing Lamar street our reporter could
find no dillerence on either side of the street
from the decorations already described
Not a place was elaborately decorated and
some iew not at all. The store people along
there don't seem to be in the decorating
mood. They win do-bidiv have wairons in
the procession to make up for it.
ius ueAb uiuca uu cucu Blue was suuering
with the same complaint. Some ot the lur.
gest houses in Texas hadn t a sign of decora
tion and the smaller ones were but meagre
One house a small one too was doing its best
to make the American sewing machine shine
forth and Its decorations were elaborate as
also were those of the house next to it. Bat
for nearly three blocks not an ornamenta
tion couiu be lounu until a large acricul
tural establishment was reached and there
was to be seen numerous evergreen tea
toons flags and above all a large American
flag beside which is to be placed a Texas
flag. Opposite this place were two or three
small places festooned and flagged. Further
up the street was an archway in evergreens
across the street with long cedar wreaths
reaching irom it to the nouses on the ou
nosite sides ot tne street. 1ms arch bore
tho legend "Singers' Headquarters." The
bouse opposite to it was elaborately
aecoratea wun evergreens ana nags.
Some few other small places on Elm
were decorated but to a small extent iu the
usual way. Another streamer stretched
across the street of evergreens bearing the
woras gieeting" in uerman
This nmsnea H.lm street and our reDOiter
turned into main street ana too noies
along down as far as the Herald building
onootn siaes. jveariy every Duuuing is or
namented to some: extent none of them
elaborately or profusely with cedar wreaths
nags ana one place a Deautnui display ol
Chinese lanterns to be lighted with flowers
Here ana tnere. Anotner place a two story
brick corner of Dvcamore and Alain was
tastefully ornamented with cedars flowers
ana navs. Ana coming on aown Main
to the Herald office our reporter found on
the north side no decorations at all some
of the houses the richest and ablest to do it
in the city and on that side bulslim orna
mentations in the way of cedar and little
bannerette.
Opposite the Herald office Mr. Neal
starxe naa tasteiui:y ana elaborately ueo-
orated his place inside and out. Flags
evergreeus flowers and fancy handwork
makei It a charming bower or beauty and
taste.
Our reporter baa passed over Saneer
Bros . bouse until now because bisnalatial
establishment embraces a part of Elm La
mar and Main streets. Our reporter was
bewildered when he attempted to take
notes of the ornamentation ot this immense
establishment aud he stood tor a tew min
utes studying where to bcBia. 1 m
bis feeble way be thought be would write
p the him street tront. Ibis front was a
mass of dags. American and German with
evergreen wreaths and lestoons everywhere
tbey could be put wittiout marring the har-
mony of the whole and amidst it all ap
peared the generous words "Dallaa is

of the area devoted to col ton. With nil
this unsolicited advice before them the

that more of that staple will be planted this
year than ever before. It seems reasonable
to suppose tbat the people of tba cotton

THE BRANCH LUNATIC ASYLUM.
Several towns are making efforts to have
the branch lunatic asylum located near
them the last ot the number being Terrell.
The committee were invited there and
were dined and wined in a manner tbat
would have done credit tn a railroad Inhhv
during a session of the legislature while en-
deavoring to get an important bill passed
or killed. Why can't Denton do some
thing? Are there no public spirited men
here? With our natural and acquired ad-
vantages a erood effort on the nart of the
citizens might seenre tbe location of the
omiatrig uere and this would be or great
benefit to Denton. What public spirited
man will take the matter in baud and com
municate with tha committee? Some
member of the city council which body
have shown s) much nluck and public
spirit of late would be the proper person
to initiate tbe matter. Who is be and whv
