There is no more intolerable and un
republican nonesense than tho talk; of
the necessity ot "a strong man" in the

distrust in American institutions. It
is a ery welcome to those who despise

(Tex.) Tribune '
" 'Ti a dirty bird that befouls its
own neat" says the old adage. The
Orange Tribune in tba abovo writes
itself down in that oatigory. Its
managers at democrats we presume
no doubt supported Tilden in 1876
and bave asserted as indeed they do
above that he was fairly elected and
iinlnatlv counted out. They do not
pretend to bave bad any new rcvela
tion as to Tilden's character yet they
now adopt tho billingsgate or the Grant
orcans against uim and all so far as ap
pears without any reason whatever I
a so doing they most effuotively
stultify and dishonor themselves only
Tilden stands far above their reach.
We gave our reasons for again sup
nnvtina- Mr. Tilden. Thoy seem to
us perfeotly unanswerable at least by
such aa supportod him before. The
Tribune does not attempt an an
swer bat runs off into personal abuse
as above
"To arguo with a man who has re-
nounced tbo uso and authority of rua
son" says another pithy authority
"is like administering medicine to
tho dead or trying to convert an
atheist by Scripture. ' Therefore we
decline any extended response to the
Orange Tribune Wo suggest to it how
ever tho prorrioty of "going slow"
because the chaooea are that it will
yet have to support Tildon after all
or soma one on whom his mantle shall
full and after abusing him so roundly
it might add if possible to tho awk
wardness and humiliation of its pres
cnt position
We baye said wo shall not attempt
tp reason with the Tribune. The
Groesbcck New Era however we notice
has douo so and we copy its handsome
and crushing rejoinder below :
The Orange Tribune usually fair in
disscussine men and measures flies off
at a tangent ut tho mere mention of
Tilden's name in connection with the
next presidency by a cotemporury and
calls him a "thief" Now Jiro. Har-
ris if you oro able to give a reason for
tho faith that is iu you jmt tell us
when und where Sumuet J. Tilden
over stole anything from anybody.
Why is it that Democrats and Demo-
cratic) newspapers will chimo in with
the Radicals in traduoingtho fair name
of tho only man who has led the Dem-
ocratic part to victory within a score
of years is beyond our comprehension.
No Tilden is not a thief. He has a
record of which any mau might just-
ly be proud. Ho pnscsses in a very emi-
nent degree tho elements of a states-
man a philosopher a leader and in
tho opinion of a largo and intelligent
body of democrats whose opinions are
not to be ignored in the coming contest
Samuol J . Tilden will if ho is not nom-
inated by tho next National Demo-
cratic Convention himself name its
nominee Tildeu's name is a tower of
strength in tho Democratic party
Those who would ignore him dare not
do it. The Dcmocrucy has many able
men in its ranks but where is one ot
superior strength and commanding
genius who has ever united tho party
on any measure ? We challenge the
tribune to point out a single one. We
have a number of third and fourth
rate statesmen who crow around in
local oiroles and get up a meagre fol-
lowing but awuy from their own dung-
hills they are not known. About all
the purpose they serve in the Demo-
cratic ranks is to divide distract and
get up schisms. Now and then one of
hem discovers that he would mako a
good president and immediately he is
an uncomproming toe of lildcn. His
follower imbibe the spirit and war is
declared against the sago of Grammer
cy Park. The most senseless brain
lnss thing imaginable is the war on
Tilden. especially tho Democratic part
of it. The Era is not the champion

' . . . - . . . a
proloctcd by tho fourteenth amend
meut to the Constitution. That amend
ment provides that the validity of the
publio debt shall not bo questioned.
The point was not disoussed freely
but rather evaded by Senator Bayard
in his elaborate speech in support of
bis resolution yesterday. . Senator
Hayard'a speech by tbo woy was an
able and excellent one but foil with-
ont apparent effect upon the Senate
I think thcro is littlj doubt now tbat
the resolution ts well as all other fi-
nancial propositions will go over for
aotion at a later session.
Tbo possible exception is the refund-
ing bill but even on tho several meas-
ures relating to that thore is a strong
feeling in favor of delay.
The Senate Conimittoe on Military
Affairs yesterday reported a bill to
correct the record in case of General
Fits John Porter. All the members
of the Committee agreed except Gen-
eral Logan who took the novel ground
tbat Congress as a Legislative body
oould not reverse tbo aotion of a Court
Martial. But as General Burnside
and all the otber members of the Com-
mittee heartily support the bill which
is the amended House bill with a few
small changes there is no doubt it will
pass probably receiving every vote in
the Senate except Logan's and nine-
tcnths of all tho votes thrown in the
House.
The House as is known lias been
for weeks laboring or loafing over its
amended rules. Tho Senate has been
waiting for the House. Those amend-
ed rules are greatly preferablo to the
present ones briefer cloarer and less
in number. The publio business could
bo transacted under them with much
more rapidity than under those now in
foroe.
But the practical man asks if the
whole of a session is to be consumed
in adopting the rules would it not be
better to have an extra session for
that purpose?
With a majority of both Houses in
favor of adjournment as early as May
and every coudition of benefit to the
country and of political expediency
for both parties urging such on early
adjournment it is strange that the rules
are not at once adopted rejectod or
put over for later consideration.
It is likely that two Commissions
will be authorized by the present Con
gressone to inquire into tbe needed
changes in the tariff laws and the oth
er on the subject of the alcoholic traf-
fic. Very numerous petitions in both
cases have been received from promi
nent people in every section of tbo
country. Bem.
The Injustice of It
Senator Bayard in bis elaborate ar
gument in favor of withdrawing the
legal-lender quality from greenbacks
assorts that it "ciin do injustice to uo
man and cannot lessen the value of
notes. in tbe bands of any bolder bo-
cause an equivalent for faco value Is
offered in gold aud silver ooin in ease
any creditor should refuse to accept
them." This is true but it is of little
importance. The objection to tbe
Bayard proposition to demnnitize
grecebacks is not that it would impair
their value but that it is part of a
soberae to diminish the quantity of
available money in circulation and
thereby to benefit those whose wealth
consists of money and credits at the
expense of the debtor class. To de-
monetize greenbacks would ultimately
force their retirement. Next would
follow the arrest of tho coinage of sil-
verleaving us only gold and national
bank notes to measure values and to
make transactions with. Is it not
evident that in this case tbe value of
money would go up and the valuo of
. ... . . .
things go down and that it
would be more difleult to pay debts?
