STEPS IN PLANNING A STATEWIDE CONFERENCE
5) Publicity should be handled on a statewide level with a state
chairman cooperating with a local publicity chairman.
Each speaker should be asked for at least three glossy print
photographs and an autobiographical sketch, with an offer to pay
for new photographs. A reference to the fact that the speaker is
in WHO'S WHO is not good enough; you will need more information
than in any "mug book" biography. (NOTE: The term "mug book" is
used in library circles to designate the many volumes of biographical
directories published where those listed write their own
glorious life his tory.)
Timing of publicity releases is important. Only an advance
notice o1. two to the press should be released prior to thirty
days of conference time. Then when this date is reached, all
papers should be sent many stories with complete data (including
home addresses) of all mentioned in news releases.
6) Select a general theme for entire Conference and attempt to
get one idea across rather than try (as Hollywood movies do)
to have something for everybody. Your speakers should be
experts in the field you choose to cover. For example, if
the theme of your Conference is "The Citizens of the Republic
of Texas," your speakers should be authorities on this subject.
Do try to select important themes and not artificial themes.
Subjects such as local, church, and family history do not need
artificial or commercial stimulation. History--true history--is
so real and exciting that it stands on its own two-feet, so to
speak, and does not need any phoney colorations.
7) Discuss all your ideas and plans with as many older people as
possible and take advantage of their experience and criticism.
Try to keep an open mind when planning a statewide conference
and remember that there is always room for improvement and
growth.HISTORICAL BOOKS BY POST
