ONLY JEWISH-GERMAN DIPLO-
MAT DEAD.
Berlin: (By I. J. P. B.) Dr. Wilhelm
Kohn the only Jewish diplomat in
Germany who has reached the rank
of Geheimer Legations-Rat is dead.
Dr. Kohn was Bavarian Minister to
Paris before the Franco-Prussian war
of 1870-1871. During the war he re-
mained in Paris with the permission
of the French Government. After the
estalishment of the German Empire
Dr. Kohn became connected with the
German diplomatic service in Berlin.
Prince Bismarck at one time offered
Dr. Kohn promotion to an important
post on condition that the latter em-
brace Christianity. Dr. Kohn however
declared that he was satisfied to re-
main at his present post. Bismarck
threatened to send Dr. Kohn to a dis-
tant consulate but as his threats re-
mained unavailing nothing was done
in the matter and Kohn continued at
the Foreign office. Nevertheless. Kohn
was advanced in rank and Bismarck
was always deeply attached to him
knowing his integrity and reliability.
Dr. Kohn was active in every Jewish
movement and was one of the great
fighters against the growing German
anti-Semitism.
Dr. Kohn was the brother-in-law of
the well-known Jewish scholar Pro-
fessor Stein.
CLOTHING INDUSTRY IN CEN-
TRAL EUROPE.
Paris: (By I. J. P. B.) Joseph
Schloberg. the general secretary of
the Amalgamated Clothing Workers
of America has arrived here from
Reval being unable to visit Russia on
account of passport difficulties.
He stated to our correspondent that
the clothing industry of Central Eu-
rope suffers from the old evil of long
hours and small pay and that the con-
dition of the individual needle indus-
try worker is by no means enviable.
He urged the Amalgamated Cloth-
ing Workers to aid and assist the
down-trodden Central European tail-
or and help the workers of Europe to
build up a strong organization.
AWAKENING OF GERMAN STU-
DENTS. Goettingen: (By I. J. P. B.) At a
convention of German students held
in this city Dr. Mahrolz delivered a
lecture on anti-Semitism among Ger-
man university students. He criticized
very severely the resolution adopted
by the Dresden Convention of German
university students against the ad-
mission of Jewish students into the
universities. The convention of this
city attempted to pass a similar resol-
ution barring from German universi-
ties Jewish students who would de-
clare themselves of Jewish instead of
German nationality. But the resolu-
tion failed of adoption by a majority
of the delegates. It was noticeable
that the spirit of this convention was
in many ways superior to the insolent
anti-Semitism displayed at the Dres-
den Convention.
en in the dispatches as Mr. Schwartz

tempt to attack the woman her broth-
er sought to defend her. The assail-
ants opened fire wounding both the
man and his sister. Later dispatches
seem to indicate the death of both al-
though it may be that they were only
severely wounded. The identity of the
male relief worker has not yet been
established.
AMERICAN RELIEF WORKERS
REPORTED KILLED BY
BOLSHEVIKI.
Berlin: (By I. J. P. B.) News has
reached this city that two American
Jews sent by relief organizations to
Grodno and Rashki were murdered
by the Bolsheviki. It appears that the
American relief worker came to Grod-
no with his sister whose name is giv-

tion of American Quakers visi1-. i I the
Jewish Orphanage of this city. The
delegation which came here for the
purpose of doing relief work in Ger-
many was accompanied by represen-
tatives of the Berlin City Council. The

trude Seligson received the guests
and showed them around all the de-
partments of the orphan asylum. Ihe
guests admired the arrangement of
the institution and partook of a dinner
with the children one of whom read
a poem in honor of the delegation
PALESTINE DEBATED AT ENG-
LISH TRADE CONGRESS.
Portsmouth England: (By I. J. P.
B.) The English Trade Unions Con-
vention which is now being held here
took up the problem of Palestine and
the condition of the Jewish workers
there. A telegram was sent to the
labor organization in Palestine ex-
pressing the solidarity of the conven-
tion with their aspirations.
The Congress also adopted a resolu-
tion protesting against Jewish po-
groms in Poland.
NEW POGROMS IN GALICIA.
Warsaw: (By I. J. P. B.) Another
series of Jewish pogroms became
known today. The local newspapers
bring dispatches showing that the
Ukrainian soldiers of Pctlura have
organized massacres against Jews in
the Galician towns of Bolszowce Ha-
licz Burzstyn Bukaczowce and Jezu-
pol. The total number of Jews killed
reaches 86.
MORRIS ENGELMAN RETURNS
FROM EUROPE.
New York: (By I. J. P. B.) Morris
Engelman of the Joint Distribution
Committee has just returned to the
United States on the "New Amster-
dam" from an extended trip through
Central Europe. Mr. Engelman made
the trip in his private character and
he was fortunate enough to interview
a number of prominent relief work
ers statesmen and men of affairs on
many matters of interest to the pub-
lic at large and to the Jews in particu-
lar. Mr. Engelman expects to report
the results of his journey to a small
circle of friends whom he will shortly
meet at some convenient place.
