Introduction
This anthology includes papers presented at the "Mexican
Americans in Texas History" conference, the first scholarly meet-
ing of its kind in the state. The conference, held in San Antonio
May 2-4, 1991, drew approximately six hundred participants,
including about one hundred scholars representing at least fif-
teen universities and colleges located throughout the state. The
audience heard fifty-two presentations that addressed biblio-
graphic, archival, historiographical, literary, political, gender-
related, labor-related, and conceptual topics. The impressive
quality of the presentations as well as the stimulating discussions
that followed attest to the meeting's success. The event also pro-
vided opportunities for the informal exchange of information
and ideas, thus contributing to the further development of the
history of Mexican-origin people in the United States.'
The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA), the oldest aca-
demic society in the state, spearheaded the event. This conference,
as well as others that focused on African Americans and women,
was organized by the TSHA in conjunction with its encyclopedia
' One of the earliest conferences on the broader subject of Mexican history
in the Southwest was held at Edinburg, Texas, in 1969. It was entitled "The Role
of the Mexican American in the History of the Southwest," and it was sponsored
by the Inter-American Institute at what was then called Pan American College.
Also, professional organizations such as the Texas State Historical Association, the
Western Historical Association, and the National Association for Chicano Studies
have devoted entire sessions at their annual meetings to Mexican American histo-
ry in Texas. The San Antonio conference, however, is the first time that scholars
devoted an entire conference to the subject.
