CRIMINAL OPPOSITION. x
The Los Angeles Times Tells a Story
Of Father Abraham.
Abraham Lincoln while president
related to a caller the following joke
on himself illustrating his position on
the matter pertaining to the question
they were discussing: "On being
elected captain" said the oresldent
'of a company in the Black Hawk war
I used to march my men to a field for
practice but had arranged them in
columns too wide to pass through a
gate at the entrance to tbe field. As I
could not think of what I should say to
reduce the columns so they could pass
through after halting tbem I said:
"Tbe company is dismissed for five
minutes and when it forms it will
please do so on the other side of the
gate."
I have thought that as the captain
of the opposition party though an ex-
colonel does not know what to say if
be does think so to get the rank and
file through the gate In the interim of
campaigns he would ' better dismiss
tbem and re-form again on the other
side. Certainly "it would from many
a blunder free him and foolish
notion."
I once knew a musical director of a
churoh choir who was somewhat absent-minded.
While beating time for
tbe singers on one occasion with a
great flourish of bis baton be failed to
notice that the einging stopped at tbe
conclusion of tbe bymn and he kept
on with bis baton performance to the
great amusement of some of tbe con-
gregation and the consternation of the
more sedate portion until the minister
announced his text.
The more thoughtful of tbe Demo-
cratic party ceased to sing tbe song of
free silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 soon
after the verdict of the people against
it in 1896 but W. J. Bryan the politi-
cal director of tbe party kept on with
his eyes shut if his mouth was not
sawing the air with his elocutionary
baton to the infinite amusement of
the Republicans and some Democrats
As one who rides in a car with his
back toward tbe engine cannot see ob-
jects until they have receded past tbe
line of vision bo tbe opposition leaders
who seem by some peculiar coincident
of fate to Insist on riding that way

views in the political landscape of the
country.
Tbe blunder 01 tbe opposition in cla
moring for tbe war to begin with
Spain prematurely is only equaled by
its criminal demand that it shall cease
before those who took up arms against
our government shall lay tbem down

A LITTLE PAPOOSE
Develops Into a Surgeon Of Remark
able Ability
Dr. Carlos Montezuma the physician
of the Carlisle Indian foot ball team is
a native Arizonian an Apache of the
White Mountain tribe. In 1871 when
about 4 years old be was taken on a
raid into the Pima country. At first
tbe war party was successful but was
finally driven back by the Pimas and
Maricopas and a few whites into the
Four Peaks range east of Phoenix
where the war party took refuge in a
cave that fronted a canyon seemingly
an impregnable position.
But the foes discovered that by
hooting at tbe granite wall of the pre
cipice the bullets would be deflected
Into the cavern. When the Pimas at
last entered the stronghold they found
nothing but heaps of gory humanity.
Hardly an Apache bad been left alive.
Under one beap shielded by the body
of bis dead mother a living papoose
was found. Adopted by tbe Pimas be
later was found by a philanthropic in.
dividual who took bim to Chicago and
educated him.
Carlos Montezuma as he calls him
self holds a diploma in medicine as
well as a degree from the Chicago Uni
versity and is reputed to be a surgeon
of remarkable ability.
