TO PROHIBIT THEAV
The Legislature May Absolutely
Forbid the Use Of Double Head-
ers. 'At the coming session of the legis-
lature" said a local railroad man who
is well posted this morning- the
various orders of trainmen and engine
men will try to have paseed a bill pro-
hibiting double headers.
"It has been the supposition that a
measure would have to be Introduced
that would indirectly compel the rail-
ways to abandon double headers but
I thick that a law can and will be
passed which will directly forbid
their use on the ground that they are
hazardous to trainmen.
"The objection of the railroad men
lies in the fact that they compel great-
er work with no increased pay and
' with added time and additional risk.
The conductors and brakemenhave al-
most twice as many draw heads to
watcb. and twice as much responsibility-
.
"As for the engineers the man on
the second engine can not see ahead
in rounding curves especially aud if
n obstruction should appear or it
should be necessary for any reason to
step suddenly the man in the second
cab krows nothing of it until
the first engineer gives the signal and
several seconds of precious time are lost
before the second man .begins to slow
down.
"Then the train is so long and its
headway Is eo prer.t that a quick stop
is impossible. Theseconditions add so
much rik to the engineer's responsibi-
lity tbat I think cn the ground of the
hazard Incurred double headers can
be abolished v The legislature of Texas
passed a law prohibiting tbem from
pushing box cars in front of an engine
didn't it? And It has paseed laws that
the legislatures of other states thought
it impossible to pass. Well just watch
them and Bee if they do not pass a law
now that is valid ana that is satisfac-
tory to the trainmen.

Its Principal Promoter Says It Will
Be Built In a Short Time
A. O. Bailey came in on the Santa
Fe this morning from New York. He
fca? been there in 'the interest of the
proposed -road from Deming to the
Pacific Coast. Mr. Bailey refused al-
most absolutely to talk concerning the
project which is of -such vital lioterest
toiEl Paso. What he did say was
this;
"The iroad from Deming will be
built and shortly it .is to go from
Demiag to the Pacific Coast and will
reach the coast at-a point 200 miles be-
low Guaymas the present terminus of
theSooora branch of the8outhernJPaci-
fic. As to the personnel of the company.
I can only say for the present that I am
the company."
It was suggested that the advantage
of a road to the eoa-t would be doubled
by having the shortest possible line to
the coost from any given point a
point on the Southern Pacifio in parti-
cular thus affording perhaps a longer
haul from the Philippines and the ori-
ent but affording also a shorter land
aaul the thing most to be desired.
To this Mr. Bailey replied that his
road" would count as one of its objects
and the main one too7 the development
or the country through which it pas-
sed. This proposed read is of vital Im-
portance to El Paso which hopes to
nave a roaa of her own to the coast in
time.

' The Train Delayed.
Coming in last night engine No. 3
on the White Oaks broke a spring
hanger. The necessary repairs were
made at the foundry and Engineer
Prothro was busy this morning fixing
up the break. The White Oaks train
was delayed several hours in getting
out this morning in consequence.

local railroad field for a while.
T. E. Hunt of the Southern Paolfic
is out again in Arizona "getting a oar
load of ostriches to be shipped to the
Paris exposition" said Reeves this
morning.
The White Oaks road has not yet
acquired the town of Gray but nego-
tiations are yet pending which will
result in its acquisition by the railroad
company.
George Stead who has been under
the weather off and on for the past
month has reported for duty again
and is again at the throttle of a switch
engine in the G. H. yards.
J. P. Hughes the contractor who is
well known to every railroad man in
El Paso' and who is now at work on
the road relaying from Clifton to
Lordeburg B around town today.

Out Of a Large Sum Of Mexican
Money.
Bernardo Muro a Mexican makes
the sworn statement that he was yes-
terday afternoon bunooed out of $300
Mexican money by several men.
Muro is 38 years of age a single
man and a native of the state of Zaca-
teca. who has been in Arizona for the
past several years. He has accumulat
ed a little money and is on his way to
Lerdo in Durango where he intends
making bis home.
He arrived in El Paso Wednesday
over the Southern Pacific. Yesterday
afternoon his story goes about one
o'clock while on bis way to the Low-
don bank to get some money changed
he was accosted he alleges by a man
who gave the name of Baca woo
claimed to be an old acquaintance.
Baca made himself agreeable and
then so Muro says introduced him to
a man who. he claimed was his broth
er and who says Muro wore the po-
lice uniform.
These two men took bim Muro con-
tinues to a saloon oa Utah street in
the rear room of which an American
and a Chinaman were playing a game
called "poker." His statement goes
on to tell again the same old bunco
story. The fall of the curtain saw him
worth 8300 Mexican and $o American
money less than he started with.
So far Mr. Muro.
The chief of police fully investigated
the story told by Muro this morning
and be is sure that - no member of the
El Paso police force was bonoerned In
the scheme whereby the Mexioan was
fleeced out of his money.
A policeman happened to be passing
near the entrance of the saloon where
the game was going on at the time
tbat the Mexican and his so-called
friend entered. He bad been
seeking another officer to relieve him
temporarily.
He saw the persons go in the place.
but noticed nothing out of the ordinary
in their appearance be says an i knew
nothing of the trouble until he heard
afterward tbat the man hd been bun-
coed out of $300. Baca Is said to be a
well known gambler.
