t Mines uid j
In From Terllngua.
W. E. Bell a prominent miner from
the great quicksilver camp of Terlln-
(rua was bi-re Saturday and Sunday on
business. He had been eubpoecaed to
attend court at Alpine this week and
returned Sunday night to be on hand
at that place when wanted.
Story Of An Old Mine.
Ao old tninlofir man on hla way from
down In Mexico to Bolorado to look up
an old mind with a view to loo a tin g
and working it tells an Interesting
story conoerning the property.
t or years ana years toere was nana-
ed down from one. generation to an-
other in Colorado that in the year
1728 the Indiana It'l upon a settlement
ot Spanish Jesuits In Southern Colora-
do and massacred them all and thete
Jesuits were down to have had a valu
able mining property but just where it
was no one knew.
It is said that there are records ex
isting in Colorado that show that they
took large quantities of copper from
the mine and for many years various
prospectors have searched for It. In
1880 some olvll engineers making a
government survey for Governor
Gilpin found a large slag dump and
unmistakable signs oi tnere caving
been on that spot years ago a smelter.
The man who made tbj discovery
knew nothing about mlnlr-g and had
never heard the legend of the mas-
sacre of.tbe Jesuits who owned a mine
so he paid but little attention to his
Qod. But an old Mexican named
Sanobex who was assisting him knew
and bad beard the legend but he
sawed wood for the time being.
Ten years later this surveyor was In
Mexico and ttere he saw miners tk-
ing large amount of rloh minerals
from plaoes similar to tne one ne ais-
covered In Colorado and Inquiring
about them learned that the places
being worked by these miners were old
mines that bad been deserted years
ago. It didn't take him long to figure
out that bis find was likely also a vai
uable one. but his buslnets was so that
be could not return to Colorado then.
Becoming anxious to know what the
old mine in Colorado might bold in
store for blm. he wrote to the
narrator of this store and told him of
the old deserted mine In southern
Colorado but he was unable to give
him the exact location of It. He told
the mining man that a Mexican named
Sanchez was with blm at the time he
made the discovery and that if be
could find him be oould probably tell
him the exact location of tbe property
But when the narrator arrived In the
locality of the mine he learned that
Sanchtz was iead. so he started out
alone In search of tbe old deserted
mine being very anxious to locate it
as the surveyor had offered him $25000
in cash and a third Interest lo the
property If he would find and locate it
for him.
For two years he remained in that
sections occupying his time In different
pursuit but never giving up bis search
for the ld mine. While prospecting
cntlntue mountains of toutbern Colo
rado he came upon an old Mexican and
tbe two spent tbe night together
While lying on tbelr blankets beneath
the stars of a betvutiful summer night
tbototold stories of their experien-
ces in -the mountains. Oje of the
stories the old Mexican told was about
the ruins of an old CastlUUn smelter
that stood upon a copper mine worked
oy tnn Jesuits more tnan a nuaared
and fifty years before. The micer ask
ed the Mexican If be knew where the
old mine about which h was tellUg
was located tie said that a Mex
lean named Sanchez bad told him
about the old mine and bad taken blm
to It but that If be ever told anybody
about it be would kill blm for al-
though Sanchez could not make any
use of tbe proper y be was so prejudic
ed against the white man that he did
not want bim to reap any bent fits from
it. Vpon being Informed that there
was no danger now as Sanchez was
dead.tbe old Mexican promised to take
blm to the mine in the morning and
the miner went to sleep to dream
of fabulous wealth to be taken from
tbe old deserted mine.
Just across on tbe adiolnlnc ridire.
they poshed their way tnrougb the al
most Inaccessible forejifof quaking ap
and pine to the soene of the labors of
tbe Jet ult miners where they found
tbe slag dump tbe ruins of the smel
ter and tbe shaft. Tbe sbaft had filled
up until It was only sixty feet deep and
growing up out of the bole with its
glsnt roots planted in the very bottom
there sio d a great pine tree with its
head towering far above the surface of
tbe earth.
An investigation showed that the
saaft possessed a large body of oopper
ore but at that time there were no
railroad facilities in that section and
copper ore was low priced so the nar-
rator decided that be could not work
the property to profit and returned to
Mexico. That was eight years ago.
aod s nee then be has traveled aod
labored in all parts of Mexico from tbe
northern border to Nicaragua
prospeoting miniog raising coffee
and working at variiua occupations.
Now that railroads have penetrated to
the heart of the mountainous and
forestcovered section of Colorado In
which the old mine Is located and coo
per has enhanced In value he thinks
that the property can probably be
worked to a3 vantage and is on his way
there to looatn aid develop io
The Hanover District Described By
Major Davis.
Following is a letter bv Mai or S. M.
Davis to the chamber of commerce on
the Hanover N. M. district:
in looking over the Hanover dlstrlot
find considerable work arolniron. Mr.
I.W.Bible formerly of Colorado Springs
oeveiooiog eight claims. Most of
tbem are copper claims but he has one
lead claim that is a fine concentrating
ore. All of his claims run well also in
silver all tbe way from 5 to 40 ounces.
tie is pusblng the development work
na can produce more than bis coneen-
t-ator can handle at tbe present time.
rar. r. i. Simmons is opening up
fine p'ece of orooertv for Mr.
Bible's company but at present is
making an up-ralse for air Tfce
ore Is rich iron sulphides carrying
cooper pyrites good ore for conoen-
tratiD? and desirable for smelters
Mr. Bible also has a lease on some of
the South west Coal aod Iron com-
pany's property and is shipping abou.
five carloads a day to tbe Pueblo Iron
Works. This is one of tbe riobest iron
beds in tbe United States. Tbe iron
runs t0 per cent over the silica. Tbls
is a wonderful property carrying suoh
iron value over the silica. Mr. Bible's
oonoer and silver claims are putting
out one hundred tons a day of concen
trating ore and are milling from io to
80 tons per day making a good carload
of concentrates every twenty-four
hours.
Mr. Bible's concentrator was put up
by tbe 1 Pa&o Mine Mill & Smelter
Supply bouse. I dOD't say It because
It is an nil faeo nouse out i ia me
most convenient and best equipped
concentrator in the southwest. The
capacity of the mill Is about 7a to SO
tons per day. It has an ou noree power
boiler and bU norse power online
B'ake crusbers and four large slzad
Bartlett tables. Everything runs as
smooth as olock work. Plenty of water;
wood costs $2.50 per cord delivered at
the colli.
Mr. Bible has the franchise for a
system of telephone branoning ou
from Silver City to all the mining
camps which lnoludes Pinos Altos
Banover Santa Rita Fierro Central
City and Fort Bayard and will be ex
tended to Mogouon mountain ana so
the Burro mountain. Part of this line
Is already up and in a few weeks it
will be finished and in working oraer.
The chamber of commerce should
try to have 1 Paso connected wltb
this system by all means as It would
bring our merchants Into close com-
munication with all these camps.
While talking to Mr. Bible about .1
Paso's contemplated Mining Exchange
he said that I oould count him In as
one of tbe obarter members and be
hoped that It would soon be organized.
The Mineral fomt zmo company
of Mineral Point Wisconsin has quite
a group of zlno claims In this dis-
trict Is doing considerable surfaoe
work and Is shipping several carloads
to Its works In Wisconsin. Tbe Han
over Copper company Is also doing
considerable work in this district.
Tbey bave shipped six or seven car-
loads of ore to tbe Silver City smelter
running from 10 to 23 per ceot copper.
Their main shaft is 135 feet deep and
has a good steam hoist. Tbey are sink-
ing the sbaft deeper to catob the ore
body farther down.
In the Fierro distrlcttwo miles from
Hanover are the big iron mines be-
longing to the Colorado Coal and Iron
company of Pueblo. They have an
immense crusher crushing about 3'JO
tons of iron a duy which goes to their
works at Pueblo. They are working
quite a lot of men and Fierro is quite a
lively camp. This ore is a very fine
iron carrying a small per cent of
silica which accounts forthe long haul
to Pueblo. Alongside of this large
Iron deposit are veins of very
heavily charged manetio iron. I can
illustrate how heavily it Is charged by
telling you what some of the boys at
work there told me about it. One fol-
low says a Dutchman a prospector
came up there wearing big nails in bis
Shoes and went to cross the vein when
he stuck fast and bad to get out of his
shoes and walk home barefooted. An-
other party said he took a oontraot to
sink a ten-foot hole aod when his blast
went off tbe iron flew up in tbe air but
it was all sucked back in the hole a?a!n.
Another yarn is that tbe railroad had
to fill tbe bole with dirt to get the loco-
motive by it. I told the boys that I
was satisfied about its drawing quali-
ties If it could draw out such yarn?.
Mr. Bible said he would gt up a
collection of ores and also send In the
different grades of bis coccentrates la
bottle form.

With Increased Plurality.
Portland Maine Sept. 11. The
republicans carried this state yester-

democratlo loss of 15 percent as com-
pared with 1896. In tbe towns tbe
republicans lost 13 peroent and tbe
democrats gained 24 percent on tbe
same basis.
Tbe plurality of the republicans this
year Is more than five thousand larger
than their plurality in 1898.
