When their friends went to meet them
at the Texas and Pa;lflo train Sunday
night none of them came In. There
were all kinds of wild rumors as to
what kept them but tbe most plsuslble
one was that told by the engineer oi
tbe incoming train.
He stated that as he rounled the
curve near Mr. Payne's ranoh there
was a c-od of tough looking men try
lng to flg the train and as he neared
them tbey opened fire and he pulled
the throttle wide open as he was sure
tbey were a rang of train robbers.
It transpires that tbe supposed band

White Oaks-Rock Island Deal De
pends On Tbe Election
There has been much speculation of
late as to what will be the outcome
of the pending deal between tbe
White Oiks and tbe Rock Island rail
roads.
J. A. Eddy one of the prime or
ganlz?rs of the White Oaks and until
recently general manager of the road.
said this morning that 'the result of
tbe comljg election would govern and
even control the action of the two
companies. He says there is no agree-
ment at present between the two com-
panies further than to survey the
proposed route that thay may be ready
to not after tbe election. The result
of the election he fays will settle it.
If McKinley Is elected tbe roads will
oooneot their lines and If ".Bryan is
elected the scheme will be abandoned
He explains this In the following:
"Every transcontinental road la the
country is preparing for the Immense
oriental trade that will follow the re-
tention of tbe Philippines and tbe
open door In China. If Bryan is
elected tbe expansion policy of the
country will be defeated and the san-
guinary hopes of railroad promoters
111 be shattered. The building of
the line from Salt Lake to the lower
ooaat the extension of the Rock Island
the completion of the Stillwell line
to Port Stillwell and tbe westward
movement of the Pecos Valley and
other roads is the direct result of the
expansion policy and for no other
purpose than to seoure tbe oriental
trade which will be enormous to an
lneetlmabls degree.
I think I am In a position to know
what I say" oontloned Mr. Eddv.
and I know that this will be the
result."
Mr. Eddy thinks there are a number
of other enterprises now pending here
and In this part of tbe country that
til bo affected likewise. He calls
attention to tbe purohssa of property
on Franklin street the new smelter
the street car propositions and asks
