FCC to Act on
Mexia's Short
Wave Station
With seven amateur short wave
transmitters operating on National
Youth Administration work pro-
jects in Texas and 14 units, includ-
ing the Mexia unit, pending ap-
proval of the Federal Communica-
tions Commission, the NYA's pol-
icy to strengthen its technical and
shop facilities for unemployed
youth is in line with the national
trend, J. C. Kellam, State NYA ad-
ministrator, pointed out here Wed-
nesday.
I.ubburk Station Approved
Latest unit to receive FCC ap-
proval is located at the NYA hoys
resident center at Texas Techno-
logical college, Lubbock, with call
letters W5JBR. Other NYA trans-
mitters are W5JAW, Austin; W5-
IYT, regional boy« center, Inks
ALLEY OOP
Dam: W51VA, hnys resident cen-
ter, Ranger; W5IWU. Waco; W5-
JDI, San Antonio; and W51YS,
boys resident center at South
Houston. Each unit is supervised
by a federally licenced operator
who trains the youths to operate
and maintain the transmitter and
acts as trustee of the club.
Favian M. Adnir of Dallas nas
been employed as tile licensed op-
erator for the Mexia station. Adair
is in Waco at this time supervising
construction of the transmitter
which will be used on the local pro-
ject. He will take up his duties
here Sept. 1, Bacsom Lang, area
NYA director, announced.
Kellam Tells of Importance
"The importance of the work ex-
perience and related training the
youths receive in the technique of
radio operation and short wave
transmission can hardly be esti-
mated during thin period of world
stress," Kellam declared. "NYA is
glad to contribute toward better
equipping our young men to hold
jobs in the vital field of radio
I ransmission. In this work we nrf
receiving splendid cooperation and
assistance from municipal police
and the state department of public
safety."
Kellam said additional local
"hum" operators are needed to act
as trustees of the radio clubs on
the proposed units, explaining that
the Texas State F.mployment Ser-
vice is assisting NYA to discover
qualified men to contribute their
spare time in this capacity.
He added that he had requested
James R. D. Kddy, director of the
trades and industries division of
the state department of education
to furnish instructors for the pro-
posed short wave units. The T. & I.
division is now providing instruct-
or* on a number of NYA projects
throughout* the state.
