Seek Assistance
of N.Y.A. Setup
Discussion Is

Meeting Today
An effort was launched tolay to
secure N. Y. A. assistance in the
soil conservation work of Lime-
stone county. Bascnm Lang of
Palestine, area supervisor of the
National Youth Administration,
met with the Mexia Chamber of
Commerce directors at their month-
ly meeting Wednesday morning,
and discussed the proposition with
Limestone county agent Ed Single-
ton and W. W. Doniiny, of the
Limestone-Falls Soil Conservation
District.
Singleton told of the importance
and growing demands for soil con-
servation projects, und then in-
troduced Dominy, who explained
the work further, and requested
the N. Y. A. to help provide the
necessary labor for the projects.
He pointed out that the work would
be in the form of training for the
boys.
Lang promised to make every
effort to secure N. Y. A. help in
the conservation work, but pointed
out that all N. Y. A. projects are
being 'discontinued except national
defense projects, and more boys
are being taken into these pro-
jects.
Several routine matters were
I taken up for di.-,cus-iun at the
I directors nu < i. g, which pre-
; .sided over by Raymond L. Dillaid,
■ president.
The Chamber of Commeice will
I send Christmas cards to all local
, men who are in military service, it
| was decided.
The W. P. A. Sewing room main-
tenance wus discussed. C. VV. Ken-
non, chairman of the committee in
charge of raising funds to sponsor
the sewing room, made a report
on contributions. The committee
will make a more detailed report
at the next directors meeting.
Frank L. Williams told of the
final financial drive of Westmin-
ster College, und urged support of
members ol' the Chamber of Com-
merce.
President Dillard remained dir-
ector of the Red Cross member-
ship drive and urged their support.
The directors voted a resolution
of respect to be presented to the
fiamily of the late Luther Cox, and
A. II. Berry was appointed by
President Dillard to draw up the
resolution.
J. I. Ridule, chairman of the
road committee, made a report for
that group.
Seventeen Pound
Catfish Landed
M. K. McGill and his son-in-law,
Roy Johnson, came by the News
office Wednesday with a fine 17-
pound catfish. Johnson landed the
fish in the Navasota river above
the Reunion Grounds, this morn-
ing.

Friday, Nov. 7, among the 319
trained technicians was Pvt. J. E.
Hodges, son of Mi', and Mrs. W.
D. Hodges, 507 So. Belknap St.,
Mexia, Texas.
Graduation marked the termina-
tion of 22 weeks of intensive train-
ing in all phases of raoio for Pvt.
Hodges. Entering the school, "the
army's nadio university," last July,
he received a thorough schooling
in code, transmitters and receivers,
and technical details of the radio
set itRelf. A total of 54 different
stations sent men on detached ser-
vice for training at the school.
The next step in his army car-
eer leads to assignment to a new
post where his radio education will
be put to use, and his skill perfec-
ted by experience. Pvt. 4th cl. spl.
Hodges, has been assigned to
Brooks Field, San Antonio, Tex.
and will report there for duty
soon.
Graduation of the class, second
largest in the history of the school,
is in keeping with the army's aim
of providing the fighting forces
with 20.000 trained radio operators
a year from Scott Field,
