WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UP)
—T! District of Columbia Court
of Appeals today affirmed the
conviction of Mayor James M.
Curley of Boston on mail fraud
The court of appeals also af-
firmed the convictions of Curley's
two associates, James G. Fuller
and Donald Wakefield Smith,
former member of the National
Labor Relations Board.
The court's decision was by a
2 to 1 vote. A dissenting opinion
was filed by Judge Wilbur K.
Miller.
The three were found guilty
(n January, 1946, of using the
mails to defraud through a war
contract group known as Engi-
neers Group, Inc. The original
indictment ugainst Curley and
the other two was returned in
1944 by a federal grand jury in
Washington.
The government said the firm
had obtained more than $00,000
from clients by representing that
Dept. of Commerce
Recommends Tax Cuts
WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (UP)
—The Commerce Department's
small business advisory com-
mittee today defied the admini-
stration and recommended in-
dividual income tax cuts up to
20 per cent.
T!committee's recommend-
ation' were announced by Secre-
tary W, Avcrell Ilarriman. They
included other tax law modifi-
cations which would reduce
business taxes as well as person-
al income levies.
President Truman has repeat-
edly insisted that tax reductions
now would be "unsound fiscal
policy."
The advisory committee, made
up of businessmen from all parts
of the country, said the' govern-
ment should "take every step
possible to get its fiscal house in
order." The administration has
taken the stand that the budget
cannot be balanced, and the debt
reduced, if taxes are cut.
it could obtain government con-
tracts for them

KODIAK, Alaska, Jan. 11 (UP)
— Two volcanoes erupted today
on two Aleutian islands hss than
100 milts apsut, and the U. 3.
Navy kept a very eye on both,
Mi.. Shishaldin. a 0,387-foot
peak on this island of Unimak,
joined nearby AkuUin volcano
in a display of fiery temper, the
Navy revealed, and has been
showering ashes to a depth of
two inches on the v illage of False
Pass, 20 miles from its cone.
Akutan, west and south of Mt.
Shishaldin, began disgorging a
red-hot lava stream from its 4,-
200-foot crest Jan, 5 and 75 white
and native residents were evacu-
ated from the immediate path of
the flow. The Navy since has
kept small craft standing by but
believes that mountain ridges
will keep the lava from rolling
into Aiiutan village.

OKLAHOHA CITY, Jan. 13
(U.P.)—Roy J Turner, 52-year-
old rancher-oilman, became Ok-
lahoma's 13th governor today
and pledged his administration
to 1 ix reductions, increased pen-
sions, long range highway build-
ing program and aid to veterans.
The oath was administered by
Chief Justice Thomas L. Gibson
of the state supreme court, then
other elected state officials re-
ceived the oath from Vice-Chief
Justice Thurman S. Hurst of the
supreme court.
Turner, elected by the Demo-
cratic party the same as every
Oklahoma governor since state-
hood in 1907, promised to name
to his official family "competent,
honest public officials."
''The revision of our tax struc-
ture is the keynote of our entire
program," said the man who
never held a public office before
other than president of the Ok-
lahoma City School Board

AUSTIN, Jan. 11, (UP) —The
.Veterans Administration today
notified Harry Benge Crozier,
Texas Unemployment Compen-
sation Commission chairman,
that resident Truman's New
Year's declaration of the end of
hostilities did not mean the "ter-
mination of the war" as it affects
the eligibility of 700,000 Texas
veterans for readjustment allow-
ance. '
Crozier said the 700,000 re-
turned Texas veterans remain
eligible up until two years after
"termination of \yar."
An estimated 56,000 to 00,000
veterans are unemployed and
claiming the $20 a week pay-
ment. In December, 10,000 self-
employed veterans received up
to $100 a month each as assistance
undfr the second phase of the
program.
