DR. HELEN EDMONDS, PAST NATIONAL
PRESIDENT, RECEIVES OLIVER MAX
GARDNER AWARDThe will of Oliver Max Gardner
reads in part: "I give and be-
queath to the Board of Trustees of
the Consolidated University of
North Carolina the sum of $25,000,
in trust upon the condition that
the said Board of Trustees shall
accept and hold the said sum in
trust in perpetuity and shall an-
nually award and pay the net in-
come therefrom to that member of
the Consolidated University of
North Carolina, who, during the
current scholastic year, has made
the greatest contribution to the
welfare of the human race."
For achievements in many spheres
----as a teacher, as an adminis-
trator, as a spokesman for the
United States, as a representative
of her race and sex, and above all
as a human being, the Board of
Governors by unanimous vote ad-
judged Dr. Helen Edmonds as a re-
cipient of the Oliver Max Gardner
Award for 1975.
In her response to the present-
ation, Dr. Edmonds made the fol-
lowing statement: "I accept this
award with the understanding that
it, in truth, belongs to the Giv-
er of all good and perfect gifts
and to all the people whose lives
have touched my life in ways to
enrich the lives of others. I
have merely been a part of a good-
ly company. I have never travel-
led the high road alone. I do not
know whether any Negro has re-
ceived this award before. If not,
then in the words of the Poet,
Shelly, it signals 'the brighter
morn which awaits our human day.'
The historical significance of the
occasion points to the prophetic
star so evident on the horizon of
this State where I have labored
for many years."
In recalling with profound nos-
talgia many of her family members
and comrades who touched her life
in significant ways, Dr. Edmonds
referred with pride to her nation-al leadership role with The LINKS,
Inc.
On behalf of the Executive
Council Members and Sister LINKS,
Pauline Ellison, National Presi-
dent, wired sincere congratula-
tions and unanimous endorsement ofthe honor, saying that we share in
the joy of this well deserved rec-
ognition and feel great pride in
the fact that her standards of ex-
cellence and high performance have
been sources of great strength and
inspiration throughout her leader-
ship of LINKS, Inc.
