Ava Gardner and Anthony Fran-
ciosa in "The Naked Maja" opens
at the Fine Arts theatre this week.
The picture's main claim to fame
is the type of advertising used
across the nation to publicize it.
In New York, a piece of cloth
was hung over a picture of a re-
clining nude to focus the public's
attention on the movie. Actually,
the movie is far from being scan-
dalous; either the scenes in ques-
Miss Gardner met Franciosa dur-
ing one of her pub-crawling expe-
ditions, grew to love and under-
stand him, and he followed her into
exile when the queen and the prime
minister grew jealous of her pop-
ularity with the people.
When Franciosa was jailed by
the inquisition for subversive ac-
tivities, Miss Gardner pleaded with
the prime minister for his life.
During her visit with the prime
minister, she discovered that he

At any rate, the movie does
have good color and an interest-
ini; story. The story concerns the
period of the inquisition in Spain.
NaiMileon is the unseen enemy.
Miss Gardner portrays a titled
lady of the king's court, and
Franciosa portrays a painter
from the lower class.

Faced with the realization that
she could upset his apple carl,
the prime minister ordered her
to be poisoned, slowly, to make
her illness seem as if it were a
fatal disease.
Then comes the worst part of
the whole picture the death scene.
Had it been handled properly, it
would have been effective. Instead,
Miss Gardner takes 15 screen min-
utes, or so it seems, to die. The
whole scene was too melodramatic.
"The ShacK)' Dog" opened at
the Campus today. Walt Disney's
productions are usually fantastic,
and this one is no exception. It
concerns a teen-age hoy who is
turned into a don by magic fiom
an old ring.
Fred MacMurray, Tommy Kirk,
Jean llaKcn, and Annette Funi-
cello star in the production.
It all started one day when Kirk
overturned a tray of antique rings
in the museum. When he returned
home, he found one of the rings in
his pants cuff and repeated the
Latin words written on the ring.
