Two blocks from the 13th COSCOM Head-
quarters on Training Rd. there were three
small houses. These houses were formerly
used for temporary family housing but
won’t be anymore. They disappeared this
week.

1 LIKE SUPERMAN Pfc. Henry J. Baer of the 62nd Engr. Bn.’s “D” Co. tears chunks
of plaster from a wall with his bare hands. With an old decayed building wit's really not
hard. The COSCUM engineers demolished three houses on Training Ave. to make room
for new construction.

three houses with ease
It’s not exactly magic. Somebody pointed
the buildings out to the COSCOM’s 62nd En-
gr. Bn. and said “Kill!” The 62nd’s “D” Co.
did. Fourteen company members literally
pulled the buildings apart on Oct. 18 and 19
leaving only skeletons which a bulldozer
demolished later.
First the engineers carefully stripped
still-usable lumber and windows from the
structure. This material was saved for
other construction projects. Then they
ripped out walls ceilings and shingles
leaving bare frames. On Tuesday the
bulldozer hit the frames. The remains went

DOES HASTE MAKE WASTE? Not necessarily as “D” Co. 62nd Engr. Bn. proved
when they demolished all but the frames of three small houses last week. While they
hastily palled apart the roof and walls the engineers saved still useful lumber and win-
dows (stacked in lower left corner) for other projects.

to the land fill and the scar was graded
over.
While the project hasn’t given the
engineers much construction training it
has certainly provided them an outlet for
relieving frustration ^he soldiers attacked
the walls with hammers shovels or just
plain kicked holes in the walls.
This demolition is making room for the
13th COSCOM Physical Fitness Training
field. The COSCOM has never had its own
PT field. In the past COSCOM soldiers had
to borrow PT fields to take their PT test.
Now they can walk just a short distance
from their company area to take the test.
Soon grass will cover the loose dirt now
marking the site where houses once stood.
Soldiers taking a short cut across Sky-
Beaver field to the 27th Fin. Co. will never
know anything was there.

Besides all of that Sfc. Donald Ray
Jordon of Hqtrs and Hqtrs Tp. (HHT) 6th
Cav. Bde. (Air Combat) is alow a very
qualified chief of the fire direction com-
puter and operations sergeant as well as
assistant to the Fire Support Officer of the
Fire Support Element of the 6th Cav.
Sergeant First Class Jordon came into
the Army in August of 1972 and went
through basic training at Fort Knox Ken-
tucky. “It ws rough” is his only comment.
Sergeant First Class Jordon found his way
to Ft. Hood and the 6th Cav. by way of a
few other interesting assignments.
“I was a drill sergeant for a while” he
says “I’ve been stationed at AIT (Ad-
vanced Individual Training) posts but not
at any basic training posts as a drill. It was
a challenge. The turnover of people that
you deal with is tremendous. And you deal
with so many different types of people and
you can never deal with any one the same
way.”
Sergeant First Class Jordon enjoyed be-
ing a drill sergeant very much and he says
that he wouldn’t mind going back to it even
though the hours are long.
As for training for the job Sfc. Jordon
said he spent a very rigid six weeks of
training. The training was mostly
classroom instruction” he said. “They
teach you to teach your trainees in a
military way to council and to of course
give PT (Physical Training).” We learned
to give PT by breaking up into small groups

and taking turns being instructors.”
Sergeant First Class Jordon has had two
other jobs besides his current one. One was
a wheeled vehicle mechanic and the other
which eventually got him into Fire Support
was as a launcher-engineer. “I was a
launcher-engineer” he said “and I was
trying to fix an Honest John rocket that had
froze. It didn’t work and I was fired. After
awhile the commander came back to me
and offered my job back to me and I told
him ‘I don’t want it back’ I told him I want-
ed to be a 13 Echo what I am today. I told
him I had taken 20 hours worth of cor-
respondence courses for this and he let me
go into it.
The Army was all an accident for Sfc.
Jordan. He explains it this way: “I came
from a poor family in W. Va. and I knew
that a college education would be impossi-
ble so I went looking for a job. Well ever-
ybody kept turning me down because I
hadn’t been in the Army and they said as
soon as we hire you you’ll get drafted.’ So I
went down to taketh physical. I had a
physical defect they wouldn’t take me
anyway.”? he pauses and smiles “You
know what? They did.
During his Army career Sfc. Jordan has
been overseas to Vietnam once and twice to
Germany.
One thing Sfc. Jordan believes in is tak-
ing care of his people and it shows as Pfc
Sam Baty of the Fire Support Element
HHT 6th Cav says “He’s a great NCOIC.
He knows his job a lot better than most of
the officers in this MOSI know. He keeps us
out of a lot of scrapes. He’s a good guy. And
being a good guy is important.”
