The LBJ Ranch near Austin is only an
hour and a half drive from Ft. Hood. An in-
teresting day can be spent touring the LBJ
Ranch area and the beautiful Highland
Lakes.
The famed Texas White House was
purchased by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1952. In
1972 President Johnson and his wife
Ladybird donated 200 acres of the ranch to
the National Park Service US Department
of the Interior. Mrs. Johnson continues to
live there. The National Park Service con-
ducts bus tours of the Ranch at regular in-
tervals every day.
VISITORS TO LBJ Ranch should stop
first at the LBJ State Park just off of US
290. The Park includes a Visitor Center
with museum and theater picnic sites
nature trails and wildlife enclosure. The

one-room Junction School first attended by
LBJ in 1912 at the age of four a tour of his
reconstructed birthplace and nearby
Johnson Family Cemetery where Presi-
dent Johnson is buried and a drive through
the LBJ working ranch for a look at the
Hereford cattle and ranching operations.
While riding through the ranch lands vis-
itors see many varieties of small game
white-tail deer and wild turkeys.
The 90-minute tours begin at 10 a.m. and
end at 5:30 p.m. in the summer (4 p.m. the
rest of the year). THERE ARE NO AD-
MISSION FEES.
