EW is a term that is used to include
all the actions taken to determine
prevent or reduce the enemy’s use of
his electronic devices.
Any EW system that enables a com-
mander to hinder the enemy’s use of
his communications can be a power-
ful weapon. And according to Cox
“Commanders must understand EW
is a weapon system that can be used
to com plem ent their combat mis-
sion.”
Effective EW systems can include
anything from simply listening to a
radio keying a hand mike or even a
recently developed artillery deli-
vered expendable communications

The importance of EW was noted
by Field Marshall Erwin Rommel of
the Nazi High Command in 1942
when he said “Concealment of inten-
tions is of the utmost importance in
order to provide surprise for one’s
own operation and thus make it pos-
sible to exploit the time taken by the
enemy command to react.”
