DEPLOYMENTS
Early in June soldiers from
the 1st Cav Div and the 507th
Air Ambulance Co 1st Med
Grp joined with medical per-
sonnel from Honduras to treat
medically indigent civilians in
Honduras. The teams were part
of the 227th Combat Avn Task
Force that participated in the
join a tio is
GRENEDERO I. The medical
mission focused on small iso-
lated towns where parasites
and malnutrition are serious
problems.
In addition to medical mis-
sions the task force completed
work on airmobile capabilities.
E xercises were conducted
much like they are at Fort
Hood GRENEDERO I 1 was
used to fine tune those mis-
sions.
“Black Nights” of the 1st Bn
5th Cav’s Co also visited the
country in October for 10-days
of routine field training. The
company conducted the same
training it had scheduled for
here at Hood which was mostly
reconnaissance and patrolling
techniques.

the Command and General
Staff College visited the First
Team as part of an Allied Offic-
er Training Observation Prog-
ram. Allied officers from 24
countries were matched with
sponsers in units similar to
their own for the week-long
visit. The program was de-
signed to let allied officers see
exactly what they had been
learning at the war college.
TRAINING HIGH-
LIGHTS
Air defense artillery and avia-
tion units will be evaluated in a
more precise manner in 1985
thanks to the addition of Multi-
ple Integrated Laser Engage-
ment S (MILES)
mounted on helicopters and air
defense weapons. In Septem-
ber the concept was demons-
trated for the civilian populous
by the 228th Avn Bn and the 1st
Bn 68th ADA. MILES equip-
ment. with its laser beams and
kill detectors signal whether a
soldier has been ’hit’ or apiece
of equipment ’destroyed’.
Another program designed to
save lives on the battlefield be-
gan in October and involves
training non-medical soldiers
field lifesaving techniques. The
Lifesaver Program teaches 25
different field medical tasks—
from applying dressings to
open wounds to initiating and
maintaining intravenous infu-
sions (IVs). On Nov. 240 mem-
bers of the 8th Engr Bn gradu-
mated from the Cav’s first Life-
saver Program.
Throughout the changes
new equipment arrivals and de-
ploym ents the First Team
stands ready to meet the chal-
lenges ahead...willing and able
to prove it’s “Ready to Fight
Anywhere at Anytime and
Win!”
