The crashed helicopter sat on
an airstrip at Robert Gray Army
Airfield. Three of the seven in-
jured passengers aboard the
copter had been thrown askew
on the ground. In addition the
potential for a hazardous fire to
start was great as the helicopter
had plenty of fuel aboard.
THAT WAS the scenario dur-
ing th monthly simulated
crash drill held at Robert Gray
Nov. 26. And realism was the
name of the game during the
crash drill.
The mission of the emergen-
cy crews at Robert Gray was to
trea the causalties and get
them away from the crash site
quickly while the Fort Hood
Fire epartm ent doused the
helicopter with water to pre-
vent an explosion.
“This mass casualty exercise
is ig to re are
emergency personnel at Robert
Gray for what could happen”
Waldermar Brown safety and
occupational health specialist
said. “We need to train vigor-
ously and as realistically as pos-
sible without unnecessary in-
jury to life and limb.
nder sim lated co i-
tions it is difficult to create
realism” Brown said. “Howev-
er with the use of the moulage
kit it becomes as realistic as life
itself. This realism is essential
in preparing the emergency
crews at Robert Gray for a real
crash.”
THE MOULAGE kit was ap-
plied to seven soldiers from the
57th Signal Bn 3rd Signal Bri-
gade who portrayed casualties
in the crash drill. The emergen-
cy crews had to go to work on
I the realistic looking injuries
immediately.
“This is good training be-
cause it gets us accustomed to
the mission” Tom Shelley fire
station captain said. “The more
practice we get at crash drills
the better we’ll be in an actual
emergency.”
According to Lt. Col. Robert
Stanberry Robert Gray Air-
field commander the drill was
not only set up realistically but
treated realistically.
“This is being treated just
like it was an actual emergen-

sions on any type of aircraft
that might crash. This drill just

STANBERRY SAID the fuel
and any ammunition on board
an aircraft creates an immedi-
ate fire hazard. The emergency
crews must act quickly if lives
