Medics of the 3rd Battalion
41st Infantry Regiment know
the meaning of success. For the
second year in a row the 2nd
Armored Division unit has
earned the Expert Field Medi-
cal Badge streamer. Out of 36
soldiers in their unit only nine

yet.
THE STREAMER awarded
to units which have at least 60
percent of its personnel EFMB
qualified is testimony of the
unit’s motivation and respect
for training.
Staff Sgt. Michael Diaz
Medical Platoon noncommis-
sioned officer-in-charge began
training his soldiers for the
May competition as early as
March. He saw seven of his 14
III Corps soldiers cross the nine mile point during
the 12-mile road march in May.

soldiers earn the badge.
According to Maj. William R.
Novak officer-in-charge for the
competition the overall pass/
fail rate was 21 percent. Out of
560 candidates 117 soldiers
earned the badge.
“Ninety-eight percent of it is
want and only two percent is
learning (the tasks) to stand-
ard” Diaz said.
Even though Diaz who
earned the badge years ago in
Germany trained his soldiers
over and over on the skills
they would need to earn the
badge. He couldn’t prepare
them mentally for the stress
especially in the Emergency
Medical Treatment lane.

have to think ... while the
clock is ticking” said Sgt.
Teroder L. Hudson.
Sergeant Cleve B. Sylvester
who earned the Combat Medi-
cal Badge during esert
Storm described the stress as
“very close” to what he remem-
bered.
“In a combat environment if
you make a mistake usually
there’ll be someone else there
to correct it out here if you
make a mistake you’re a no-
go.
STRESS WAS a “killer”
leading soldiers to make minor
mistakes such as not tying a
knot tight enough tying a
dressing on the wrong side or
forgetting to check for a pulse.
The key is learning to be calm
under pressure said Hudson.
But training breeds confidence.
“We are the experts out here
and experts don’t make mis-
takes” Sylvester said.
Tension mounted as Diaz’s
squad came down to the final
events. With all go’s behind
them the seven soldiers bat-
tled their nerves as they await-
ed the early-morning start.
“I got up at three a.m. be-
cause I couldn’t sleep” Hudson
said. “I went out of the tent
into a sprinkling rain took a
deep breath ... and got sick.”
Specialist Demetrius Luck
who earned the badge with
only one month left in the
Army said that every muscle
in his body cramped up at the
10-mile mark. Luck a Wash-
ington D.C. native who plans
to pursue a career in the medi-
cal field as a civilian said he
earned the badge because he
wanted the respect that goes
along with it.
“Even though we trained to-
gether I can look back and say
that I did this by myself” Luck
said.
"Whether we find my contact lens or not I want to thank you
all anyway for becoming involved."

had to receive an intravenous
solution after he finished the
12-mile road march with only
five minutes to spare.
“AS I hit the nine-mile
mark the heat set in and I
staggered on the last mile” he
said.
Sylvester not only qualified
during the road march but
came in first with a time of 2
hours and 21 minutes. His se-
cret ... “My wife met me at the
half-way point ... that moti-
vated me to go all the way.”

3rd Bn 41st Inf Regt Medical
Platoon leader said he was
most impressed by the way the
soldiers held their heads high
even if they were out of the
running.
For example on day one Syl-
vester received a no-go. But
that didn’t Stop him. During
the night-land navigation
course Sylvester described by
his peers as “the best” at land
navigation received the no-go
even sifter spending an extra
hour going over his points six
times.
However Sylvester per-
sisted completing the remain-
ing events with all go’s.

soldiers during the EFMB 12-mile
road march in May.
“I knew somehow it would be
overturned” said Sylvester.
Later after it was found that
many soldiers had the same
points it was contested and
overturned.
Diaz said its a tear-jerking
experience to tell someone he’s
a no-go when they wanted it
that bad. Diaz lost three of his
soldiers on the next-to-last day
of the two-week train-up and
test phases. Each loss was seen
as a personal defeat for Diaz.
HOWEVER DIAZ took
notes and videotaped much of
the event and plans to begin
training soon for the next com-
petition this fall.
